This Throwback Thursday this week is from back in 1999! When it was just Raad Ghantous and not yet Raad Ghantous & Associates / RG&A.... From when I was a Junior Designer at the industry's iconic mega power house HBA /Hirsch Bedner Associate; at their Atlanta office. Where as part of the design team working on the Grand Hyatt Dubai project I was assigned the task to design the resort's planned Arabic/Lebanese restaurant 'Awtar'. Today, over a decade after the restaurant opene...d, it remains as a reviewer on Tripadvisor.com as recent called it Impeccable.!! They went on to say: "I am returning here after a long time, nearly 7+ years. The service, The food, the ambiance, the shisha, The musical band + belly dancer all add to the superb feel of the place....the guests are left with the feeling like they dined like kings & queens. Good job !!" Others have commented saying: "One of the best restaurants in Dubai.The food was excellent, the decoration was awesome. I strongly recommend it. I have long held to a few guiding principles based on the deeply rooted philosophy. One, that "we don't design interiors...we design experiences" & secondly that if we do our job right and the design is custom tailored and truly bespoke to the client, providing them with an authentic and unique defensible and brand-able environment then the place should have a 'shelf life' of no less than 7 to 10 years! It seems in the case of the still going strong Awatar restaurant at the Grand Hyatt Dubai that has been the case for much longer than that!! Today we are at a fork in the road. A moment of truth is upon us. As we navigate the now no longer a novelty of living with COVID19 and the ripple effects it has had on every aspect of our lives we have a choice to make. Lets all be very very clear here as a step one....THERE IS NO GOING BACK TO THE OLD NORMAL! and to be honest nor should we want to do so!! I have been noticing of late that many across multiple industries have attempted to emerge from the pandemic espouse the... same 'yesterday's logic' just packaged in a new wrapper. Following yesterday’s logic is always the natural thing to do sure and it may work for a split second, although there is typically a downside. If we were not acting like an entrepreneurs before COVID-19, we must do so now to be successful! because: The entrepreneur always searches for change, responds to it, and exploits it as an opportunity. ~ Peter F. Drucker A virus killing our fellow citizens and hurting our economy causes obvious undesirable change, but it also forces opportunities that can help significantly in our efforts for a for a better future. In fact some will be game changers! Many restaurants have gone online to satisfy new demands due to social distancing AND developing their very own delivery systems. Gyms have built outside fitness pavilions, AND many instructors are training their clients over the Internet AND acquiring new clients. Doctors are now seeing and diagnosing patients over the Internet AND as such making 'house-calls'. Even schools, colleges and universities, large and small are now teaching 100% online AND able to accommodate more students without limitations of even borders or nationalities! This pandemic has forced the fastest labor realignment since WWII! Today workers are available AND OPEN to new innovations and ways of doing things. This is an unprecedented opportunity to seek change and innovation and have many open across the globe to embrace change. Another Drucker quote is worth sharing here: In a few hundred years, when the history of our time will be written from a long-term perspective, it is likely that the most important event historians will see is not technology, not the Internet, not e-commerce. It is an unprecedented change in the human condition. So be safe and healthy, live long and prosper and with enthusiasm and creativity engage and seek out tomorrow's new promises over 'Yesterday's logic'!
