Sealed Primary Molars-Lower Caries Risk, August JADA Finds The ADA News (7/25, Versaci) reports that a study published in the August issue of The Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA) found sealed primary molars are less likely to develop pit-and-fissure caries. For the study, the authors examined the dental records of 297 children younger than 6 years old at high risk for developing caries, finding the odds of developing pit-and-fissure carious lesions in s...ealed primary molars were 0.055 and 0.013 times the odds of nonsealed primary molars when sealants were placed in the outpatient clinic and operating room, respectively. In addition, in molars that became carious, those that were sealed in the outpatient clinic were associated with delayed caries development. Dr. Rosalyn Sulyanto, corresponding author and instructor in the Department of Dentistry at Boston Children’s Hospital, said, Our study provides scientific evidence that highlights the important role of sealants on caries prevention in primary molars. We are extremely excited to welcome Dr. Sierra to the Quality Dentistry Team. Dr. Sierra grew up in California’s central valley in the small town of Lindsay, which is known as the olive capital. Growing up, he rode horses and competed in rodeos throughout the state where he was a three time all-around cowboy champion. He became interested in dentistry at a young age, enjoying his time in the dental office and his conversations with his family dentist. Brandon attended Califo...rnia State University, Fresno where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry. Following undergraduate studies, he moved to San Francisco in pursuit of his D.D.S. at the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni school of Dentistry. While at Dental School, he met Dr. Wong through the Center of Success mentorship program. Along with being Brandon’s mentor, he and Dr. Wong would enjoy a round of golf anytime their schedule’s aligned. See more
