For #InternationalDayofWomenandGirlsinScience, QBI is drawing attention to the the important roles women play in science, and the continuous need for more diversity in #STEM. We asked four QBI women who have recently started their own labs, Faranak Fattahi, Pavithra Viswanath, Allison Williams and Balyn Zaro, to share the challenging as well as encouraging experiences they face in their careers. For the full interviews, visit our website: https://qbi.ucsf.edu/internationaldayofwomeninscience2021 https://youtu.be/HUJqs-3onp8
Listen to Nevan Krogan on KCBS Radio #AskAnExpert discuss his new collaborative research that reveals that #Aplidin, a cancer drug, is effective against the #coronavirus, including the UK strain

MERS, SARS, and COVID-19 are three deadly respiratory diseases caused by different coronavirus strains. Can we use the same weapons to fight them all, along wit...h any future coronavirus strains? New research by scientists at EMBL-EBI, QBI UCSF, the University of Freiburg, Institut Pasteur, and colleagues identifies drug targets and repurposed therapeutics that may have broad-spectrum activity across three different coronavirus strains. These therapeutics could be repurposed as COVID-19 treatments. https://www.ebi.ac.uk//repurposing-drugs-pan-coronavirus-t
Many scientists continue to work together to understand how the SARS-CoV-2 works and are in unique collaborative setups where accomplishments that would take years are completed in months. The QBI Coronavirus Research Group has many students, postdocs and trainees working together under the Structural Biology Consortium (SCB). Check out this video of the Crystallography Subgroup where Iris Young, Ursula Schulze-Gahmen, Huong Kratochvil and Nadia Herrera describe how cryst...allography plays a role in studying SARS-CoV-2! QBI Investigator, Jennifer Doudna, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, along with Emmanuelle Charpentier, for their revolutionary discovery of CRISPR. We’ve been delighted to have Doudna as a longtime collaborator using CRISPR-based approaches to study host pathogen interactions and neuropsychiatric disorders as part of three QBI center grants, including HPMI (hpmi.ucsf.edu), HARC (harc.ucsf.edu), and PCMI (pcmi.ucsf.edu). We applaud the ground-breaking advances she has... contributed to science and honor her achievements, along with the rest of the world today. https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/chemistry//press-release/
Michelle Moritz,Tristan Owens and Sergei Pourmal from the Purification Subgroup in the QCRG Structural Biology Consortium describe how their work plays a role in a larger effort to gain insight on SARS-CoV-2 and how to combat it. QCRG Scientists, Klim Verba and Oren Rosenberg, tell the story of how the QCRG Structural Biology Consortium (a group that includes around 60 people from over 15 labs at UCSF and is mostly driven by graduate students, postdocs and faculty) started and continues to play an important role in collaborative science and in understanding how viruses inactivate human cells and turn them into virus-making factories. Through structural biology, the group is able to visualize pathogenetic processes at the atomic level and aims to turn new insights into drugs and therapies for viruses, like SARS-CoV-2. QCRG Scientist, Sarah Rockwood, explains collaborative research published on Biorxiv, which looks at how SARS-CoV-2 is able to enter the heart and affect its cell types directly. By using a method called QPCR in in vitro stem cell systems (the same method we use to get tested for COVID-19) it was found that cardiomyocytes, the main cell type in the heart that drives contraction, are very susceptible to SARS-CoV-2; a novel finding that is believed to partially explain the severe signs of acute cardiac injury in some patients infected with SARS-CoV-2.
