Our community lost a luminary member this past holiday season, and PVF lost a good friend. We mourn the loss and celebrate the legacy of Alan Scott, M.D., one of the giants in modern medicine and a highly respected faculty member of the CPMC Department of Ophthalmology for nearly 65 years. Dr. Scott was born on July 13, 1932, in Berkeley, CA, and passed away on December 16, 2021, at the age of 89. He was a unique and brilliant person whose instrumental role as a member of the... CPMC Ophthalmology Department included his work researching, developing, and bringing botulinum toxin (now known as Botox) to the pharmaceutical industry after obtaining FDA approval in 1989. His goal in developing botulinum toxin as a therapeutic medication was to treat a variety of eye abnormalities such as strabismus. The drug, however, proved also to have great value in a wide variety of therapeutic settings outside of Ophthalmology. Dr. Scott was a physician from the old school, seeing patients and helping solve their problems. At the same time, his genius drove him to develop botulinum toxin as a safe and effective drug, working much of the time in his garage and taking out a loan on his own home to fund his work. In a San Francisco Chronicle interview, he was asked about the evolution of his therapeutic drug into a cosmetic blockbuster. In his typically modest way, Dr. Scott replied, Life’s a mysteryIt’s dazzling, all the things that happen. Dr. Scott was quiet and witty, with soft-spoken, thoughtful comments that were always uniquely to the point. As a human, he was beloved by colleagues, residents, and patients alike.
