The Holidays are near, that means company! If you plan on having guests over for the holidays, you can assume there will be more water usage such as showering, doing laundry, using the toilet, the dishwasher, and kitchen sink. Here are a few simple tips we can give to avoid a crappy situation: Stagger shower usage - Have your guests shower either before bed or in the morning to avoid a backup. Staggering shower usage reduces the water entering the septic system and will less...en the likelihood of a septic tank backup. Do not overload Dishwasher - With a house full of guests, the dirty dishes will pile up quickly. Rather than washing load after load, start stacking the dishwasher and run it in the afternoon or late night when no one is showering. Holiday paper plates are the way to go if you want to avoid washing dishes all together! Limit laundry washing - Spread out loads of laundry over a period of a few days before or after having guest. Doing one big load can also allow a few days without running excess water through the septic system. Do not use toilet as a trashcan - Some guest are not aware that they are contributing to the problem by throwing things like dental floss, gum, paper towels and feminine products into the toilet. Keep a trashcan in your bathroom and ask guest not to flush anything other than toilet paper down the toilet to avoid any unwanted items from entering your septic tank. Mind the kitchen sink - Ask guests to place eggshells, coffee grounds, potato peels and other solid foods into the trash rather than using the garbage disposal. Avoid pouring any grease, oil or fats down the drain altogether. Conserve and maintain - Check and repair any leaking toilets or faucets. Having water efficient shower heads and toilet conversion kits installed can help reduce water usage. Schedule a Septic tank pumping - The best way to avoid slow drains, foul smells, and backups at the worst possible time is scheduling a septic tank pumping before guest arrive. This can greatly reduce the chances of problems when having a house full of guests during the holidays. Don't forget, if a problem does arise, PSTS has 24 hour emergency services! Do not hesitate to calls us Call and schedule a pumping today! Do not wait too long, spots are limited!

Grease traps: Grease traps are devices placed on kitchen cleaning appliances such as sinks, and any other drains that collect grease. Properly maintained grease traps help prevent unwanted grease build-up in a private or public sewers. Grease traps are required in restaurants and establishments. Cooking grease that gets washed off cooking appliances and kitchenware can end up causing significant problems in building drains and sewers. The use of sanitary and combine...d sewers and storm drains require properly installed and maintained grease traps in all restaurants and food establishments. There are 2 types of grease traps: 1. Traps located in an establishment near the fixture it serves. 2. Large traps located outside the building in the ground that serve the entire kitchen. Fixtures that require a grease trap include: - Pot sinks - Rinse sinks at dishwashers *Note: Garbage disposals should not be installed in these sinks. - Dishwasher outside trap only *Note: Dishwashers cannot flow through a point-of-use trap inside a building. - Floor drains and sinks - Automatic hood washers. Grease and solids from food establishments are captured in the trap, while water is flushed to the sewer system. Periodically, the trap needs to be opened and the grease and solids removed to allow the trap to continue operating properly. Grease traps should be completely emptied at least once a month to keep it maintained. Never add bleach, emulsifiers, enzymes, or any other chemical to the grease trap. These cleaning products harm the natural bacteria that eat grease and oils in grease traps. The only additive allowed into the sewer system is bacteria. Bacteria consumes fat, oil, and grease in the trap, turning them into water and carbon dioxide. Interested in getting on a monthly maintenance for your grease trap?
