This week we are focusing on our community's needs as we recognize that emergency medical procedures can be out of reach for some. As pet guardians, most of us have experienced the moment of fear and panic when we realize our pet is sick or injured. Nearly every day, our shelter is contacted by pet guardians in this stressful situation. They’ve visited an emergency vet and discovered that treatment for their pet’s life-threatening illness or injury will cost thousands of doll...ars. Expenses like this are far out of reach for many families. With nowhere else to turn, they come to the Palm Springs Animal Shelter, making the agonizing decision to surrender their pet to us with the hope we will provide their beloved pet with the life-saving care he or she needs. But this is not who we are or what we do. At PSAS, we bring families together not pull them apart. Families should never be separated due to a lack of financial resources, particularly during this incredibly challenging time. This is why our SAVE Fund - Saving Animals with Veterinary Emergencies - was established. Thanks to the incredible generosity of Ed Zeigler and David Gaines two devoted PSAS volunteers who made a matching gift of $10,000 you can double your impact and save even more lives. From time to time an animal will arrive at the Palm Springs Animal Shelter and it is clear that life has dealt him a tough hand. Donny was surrendered to PSAS by his most recent owner, who, at 90 years old, and after trying for a long time, finally came to realize that Donny was way too much for her to handle, and she hoped there was a way to find a better fit for him. At 65lbs, Donny is a big boy, and is even somewhat underweight. Boxers are often high energy dogs who nee...d room to run, and Donny definitely fits that description. In the play yard Donny is goofy and full of life and spirit. One of his most unique and special qualities is how generously he is with his love, he does what only a few dogs know how to do - leans into his person’s side so they can feel that he is giving all the unconditional love that only he can offer. Donny also stands on his hind legs, puts his front paws on shoulders, and embraces his person. He actually takes all this very seriously and bonds quickly to those who show him love in return. Donny is also happy to provide a sloppy kiss or a sweet nuzzle from his incredibly soft muzzle. He is good on a leash and will stick by his handler’s side for miles. Donny’s previous owner did suggest that he had exhibited separation anxiety which is a common behavior for not just shelter dogs, but dogs in general. However, we quickly found that Donny’s anxiety was worse than most. The hope fading from his eyes when being returned to his kennel after a walk or time in the play yard is heartbreaking for anyone who witnesses it. Donny has tried to climb his kennel walls and find any way possible to escape to be near people. We knew immediately that it would be difficult to find a home that would not only understand Donny’s more extreme separation anxiety, but also one that would be willing to work through the training and care modifying it might take. Our PSAS veterinarian has prescribed medication to help make Donny’s stays in his kennel easier, but what we would love most is an adopter who will take the time to understand that while Donny may not appear to be the perfect dog, in the right home he will thrive and has so much to offer a person who is ready to commit to understanding his unique needs. An ideal adopter for handsome Donny would be a person or family who is home as much as possible, who is active, and who is ready for a rewarding project. We believe that with time, and managed medication, Donny will fit in where he is loved and provided for. Thanks to our supporters who have generously donated to our LOVE Fund we are able to offer one year of medications for Donny to help him transition into his new home. If you are interested in adopting Donny, please fill out our online application: https://psanimalshelter.org/adopt/adoption-application/ Thanks to Geir Ness we have a $10,000 match challenge that allows you to double you impact while supporting our LOVE Fund and animals like Donny: https://bit.ly/2Lp3oGa

As we continue to GIVE TO WHAT YOU LOVE, we want to tell you about how our LOVE Fund has helped one our shelter pets. Most recently, The LOVE Fund allowed us to save a sweet pit bull mix from a nearby county shelter with limited veterinary resources. Because of several fractured toes, Lula Mae had one more day before she was scheduled for euthanasia and we responded to the shelter’s plea for help. One of our amazing volunteers drove to pick up Lula Mae (who quickly became a... staff and volunteer favorite), and because there were resources in our LOVE Fund, we were able to partner with an orthopedic specialist who expertly repaired Lula Mae’s toes. Thanks to The LOVE Fund, Lula Mae is almost healed from her surgery and will be looking for her forever home in the coming days! With your contribution, you ensure that PSAS can continue to help animals like Lula Mae, and even better, when you give today, your donation is doubled thanks to a generous $10,000 matching gift from PSAS supporter, Geir Ness! Give today to DOUBLE your life-saving gift: https://bit.ly/379xohN
