One of the most important things a massage therapist can offer is their knowledge of anatomy. Teaching their clients about the human body and explaining to them their own unique issue could be a life-changing experience for them and speaks volumes of how well the therapist helps their clients to help themselves.

There are many different kinds of headaches. In addition to the types mentioned below, temporal headaches (both sides of the head above the ears) are typically caused by TMJD (pain and dysfunction of the jaw).

Massage Therapy Relieves Tension Headaches Did you know that more than 60% of the 45 million Americans who suffer from chronic headaches also suffer from migraines? That's a significantly large percentage! Unfortunately, tension headaches are the most common and are often caused by stress/anxiety and lack of sleep.... Headaches can last for a few hours up to several days and are sometimes accompanied with nausea as well as sensitivity to light and sound. They can seriously impact daily life when they occur frequently or for extended periods of time. Massage therapy is one natural or more holistic alternative to over-the-counter prescriptions that usually cause unfavorable side effects while also not addressing the root of the problem; muscle tension. Massage helps to relieve tension headaches by easing muscle tension, relieving muscle spasms, releasing shortened muscles and relaxing tension held in the muscles of the head, shoulders, and neck. When muscle tension eases, there is less pressure on the nerves and blood vessels that supply them. Not only does massage help to relieve and relax muscles of the body, but can also help to reduce mental stress and anxiety that may cause tension headaches. Regular, ongoing massage therapy can also help to prevent headaches by helping to reduce overall stress and the muscle tension that can trigger headache pain and by helping to maintain emotional balance.

Your Psoas & Low Back Pain Many people have never heard of the Psoas (the 'P' is silent. I know, it's strange) or Iliopsoas muscles, which is Psoas and Iliacus combined and unfortunately it is very commonly overlooked with low back pain. When you learn about where it's located, you'll understand why! So, what is the Psoas? ... The Psoas is a long hip flexor and deep core muscle located in the front of your lumbar spine then goes down through your pelvis and attaches to the inside and behind the head of your leg bone. Sounds confusing, doesn't it? Well, unlike its origin and insertion, its actions are actually pretty simple: raising your leg and bending over. While the movement is rather straightforward, the Psoas is extremely important for holding your posture. A shortened Psoas can affect the position of your pelvis by tilting it and pulling your lumbar spine forward from several hours of sitting, making it tense and sometimes, even irritated, thus causing the dreaded low back pain. A weak or very tight Psoas is not to be taken lightly. Along with low back pain, you could also experience difficulty doing daily activities such as walking, running, getting up from a sitting position and climbing stairs. I know none of us likes to be slowed down due to back pain, right? Fortunately, there's a way to treat low back pain by addressing the Psoas as one of the main muscles. Manual massage techniques, exercises for strengthening and proper, gradual stretching can be used to help release the tension and relax the muscle.
