Right now, Senator Weiner, LA DA George Gascon, SF Public Defender Mano Raju, Retired Judge Harlan Grossman, Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo, and CA Director of the Drug Policy Alliance Jeanette Zanipatin are discussing SB 378, legislation that will end mandatory jail and prison sentences for nonviolent drug offenses. Current mandatory minimum sentencing requirements deny judges discretion to sentence drug offenders to probation in their communities, and they contribute to mass... incarceration. This change will reduce prison overcrowding, end overly punitive and outdated laws enacted during the failed War on Drugs, and will help keep families and communities together. @scott_wiener @gasconforlada @manorajupd @drugpolicyalliance @ladaoffice @sfpublicdefender @asmcarrillo @wendycarrillo #warondrugs #criminaljusticereform #endmandatoryminimums #sb378

Congratulations to Los Ángeles District Attorney, George Gascón, on today’s inauguration. @gasconforlada @ladaoffice During his swearing in, DA Gascón committed to treat children like children, increase access to victims’ resources, hold police accountable, end cash bail for non-violent crimes, cease charging ALL enhancements and third-strike allegations, initiate widespread resentencing, and cease seeking the death penalty and quality of life crime. This is a momentous day for LA County.

Prosecutors have the power to charge people with crimes despite faulty or lacking evidence. Prosecutors have the power to oppose parole irrespective of someone’s behavior in prison. Prosecutors have the power to concede that a conviction is unjust. Arturo spent 26 years in prison on a wrongful conviction out of LA County before being exonerated with the help of @norcalinnocence . This year, at 44 years old, he will vote for the first time. @dajusticecoalition #vote #vote2020 #voteforchange #voteforyourlife

Welcome home, Marlon!

Project for the Innocent 02.09.2020

LPI is thrilled to announce that our client, Marlon Yates, was released from prison on Friday after being found parole eligible due to the zealous advocacy of attorney Joseph Magazenni, a Loyola Law School alum and staunch ally of LPI. While Marlon is now free to rebuild his life outside of prison, LPI’s fight to prove his innocence in court continues. The underlying crime for which Marlon was wrongfully convicted occurred in the early morning of May 15, 1993, when someone ...shot at a passing police car and shattered the back window. Marlon was arrested and convicted based on the testimony of a single eyewitness, who made the identification in the middle of the night, under a broken streetlight, and at significant distance. Now, over 25 years later, significant new eyewitnesses have come forward to prove Marlon’s innocence, and say what really happened that night.@loyolalawschool @jmagazenni See more

On February 22, 2019, Michael Tirpak walked free after spending 25 years in prison on a first-degree murder conviction for a crime he did not commit. After overruling the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s challenge to the constitutionality of California Senate Bill 1437, a Los Angeles Superior Court Judge vacated Tirpak’s murder conviction and ordered his immediate release from prison. Tirpak was the first person in Los Angeles County to receive the retroactive relief provided for in Senate Bill 1437. Michael cannot vote but he urges those who can to vote for LA DA. @dajusticecoalition @ladaoffice @gasconforlada #vote #vote2020 #voteforchange #1437 #sb1437
