This week, I will formally assume a new position as the Ag Director, Directorate of International Programmes, University of Uyo- reporting directly to the Vice ...Chancellor. This new assignment is coming at a very tough time due to COVID 19 pandemic, which also means we have to reinvent our strategies and take on new ways of moving with the new normal. I have a huge task of contributing to the internationalization agenda of the University of Uyo and I am very happy our visionary Vice Chancellor, Professor Nyaudoh Ndaeyo, is very keen on seeing to the realization of this agenda. While I hope to draw on my existing network, I will also leverage and build on existing plans, structures and framework to generate the needed momentum for progress as circumstances/the macro environment permit. I thank our Vice Chancellor, Prof Ndaeyo, for considering me capable of driving this agenda. I thank my immediate predecessor and current Dean of Social Sciences, Prof Chris Ekong, for the smooth transition/encouragement. I am very positive we will break new grounds-whether Covid 19 likes it or not, we will succeed. See more

Theory! Theory!! At University of Benin, I would 'cram' all the lecturers notes and give it back to them at examination. After a cramming process, I would walk ...gently because if I shake too much, the content might fall off Then I resumed for my Masters degree in the UK and on my first lecture, the lecturer asked me 'So Akan, what do you think?' You need to see my face. Me?? Think?? How?? I was confused!! Please lecturer, tell me what you think so that I can think what we think!! Over the years, I have now understood the power of independent reasoning and originality but how many African students are still caught in the 'cramming web' when employers reward initiative!! It was amazing to win international funding with Lancaster University colleagues to construct two amazing waste to energy plants at the University of Benin Nigeria and Umar Bun Hatab Islamic school at Madina Zongo Ghana. Currently we are working with African partners on developing practical content for secondary and university science and engineering students to learn not just theory but the practicals of waste to energy. Join me to learn more about this incredible ACTUATE project on Thursday May 6th at 10am UK time. See flyer for details!!
