Confused about what sweeteners to use? Here's the skinny on sweets: Splenda - calorie free but about 600 times sweeter than table sugar which messes with your palate. Best used (very) sparingly in drinks. Honey - contains more carbs and calories than standard sugar but has minerals and antioxidants. Great in hot drinks or a little bit drizzled on yogurt. Coconut Sugar - Expensive but has minerals, B vitamins and antioxidants. Best in baked goods, swap 1 for 1 with sugar. ...Agave Nectar - has more calories than sugar and more fructose than HFCS but doesn't spike your blood sugar levels. Best used in cocktails. Sugar in the Raw - not that different than table sugar but does contain trace amounts of calcium and potassium. Best for crusts, toppings, etc. See more

SPORTS ILLUSTRATED SWIMSUIT ISSUE 2016. 3 different women, 3 different covers. Are they trying to be everything to everyone or is opinion finally embracing the fact a woman’s beauty is not defined by one size fits all ? ... At Professional Weight Control we see various shapes and sizes all the time. What we are noticing and seems to be reflected by this issue(s) is people coming in are now far more concerned about their health and what their optimum weight for their body type is vs trying to fit the stereotype thats been dictated to us all by the fashion industry for so many years. The general public is no longer buying into a size 2 (4?) being the be all, end all. Human beauty as seen through the eyes of advertisers finally seems to be represented by women of most shapes and sizes. Granted, the women in the swimsuit issue are all lying around on beaches having been tended to for hours by make up artists, hair stylists, wardrobe consultants etc. Who knows how much air brushing gets done in the final analysis. But that said, to see something other than a stick thin woman representing what is supposed to be the ideal of true physical beauty is progress and we are glad to see it. If you’re wondering what your ideal BMI is, by all means drop on by or use the BMI calculator on our website. We’d love to say hello and go over what your healthy weight should be. And if you have an opinion on the swimsuit issue, we’d love to hear about that too!

Spring is almost here (although it feels like summer right now)! Choosing new wardrobe pieces can be a fun and rewarding experience if you know what flatters your body type. For pear shaped - Light colored tops paired with dark bottoms works wonders. Tailored skirts and pants are great - stay away from bell bottoms! If you're wearing dark colored skinny jeans a tunic style top can look great. In the case of printed materials, smaller print is better. For apple shaped - Pi...ck shaped T shirts and dresses. They accentuate the positive! Try to stay way from short, cropped tops and jackets which draw attention to your waist. Again, pick lighter colored top, dark pants or skirts. Wedge heels are fabulous for any figure. Big jewlery works well too. Smallish items can get lost in the overall impression. Slim people can look laden and overwhelmed with large earrings and necklaces. Not you - this is where you really get to take advantage of the situation and shine so - bring it! See more

Protein Protein Protein WHAT is the big deal with protein and weight loss? Well, to just cut to the chase... 1) Helps you feel full, for longer 2) prevents oversating and helps control sugar levels in blood... 3) major building block of the body - vital in development, maintenence and repair of body tissue 4) Involved in production of hormones 5) helps form antibodies that aid in infection prevention 6) helps with production of enzymes which cuase chemical reactions in your body In short, your body really, really needs it. The less carbs (stored in the body as fat) you eat and the more protein, the less likely you are to become overweight. That said, there is an essential balance. If you'd like to find out more come on in or give us a call. We're happy to share with anyone, anytime! See more

Here's the down and dirty on age related weight loss: In your twenties: you can basically get away with eating what you want (within limits), when you want. There's alot of group meals, eating out... and your metabolism is clocking right along. That being the case, research shows people follow the lead of the first person in a group to order so try to chose healthy spots that everyone will enjoy. Another tip: try not to eat in front of a screen. Those that do feel less sa...tiated than people who actually focus, if only for 5 minutes, on the meal in front of them. In your thirties: no time, no time, no time! If you're a Mom, choose a gym that has child care or do online workouts at baby's nap time. Get a stroller meant for jogging. 2 minute meals for anyone: whole wheat toast with scrambled eggs. Whole wheat pasta and low sugar tomato sauce. Canned tuna or salmon with salad greens and grape tomatoes. You can do this! In your forties (and here's where it gets really interesting): As you age your body's metabolism slows down and muscle naturally starts to break down. By eating protein thoughout the day and doing some weight training you can fight off that process. Trick is, eat the protein at the right time!!! When you eat the majority of protein at dinner (as most of us have done all our lives) your body doesn't have time to use it all as energy so it has to store it as fat. By spreading out your protein intake you give your body a steady stream that it can use. See more

Ok - new year, new start but now that we're well into January you're having a little trouble motivating yourself to get off the couch and moving? Here are a few tips that might help get you up and out the door: - Identify and isolate your focus and reason for wanting to get into the shape you want. Keep that reason at the forefront of your conscious. - Talk yourself into it using the positive. Instead of saying "If I don't do this I'm never going to get fit", say "Ok - this... is me moving. I'm getting up, shoes are on and here I go"! Visualize your reason AND you get to be proud of yourself when you do it! - Set a goal. Sign up for a Charity walk - or run. Or run 10 miles a week. Make the goal doable, realistic and as you get into better condition, add a little more each time. Push just a little harder. - If your regime is getting boring, swap a day of the usual for a dance class, a swim, a different area to run in - just keep moving! - Reward yourself when you've achieved your goal. This stuff isn't easy. Achieving the goal in and of itself is genuine reward but knowing you've started this year off with a bang, kept to the plan and made yourself a long term priority? Now that's a great start AND template to a whats going to be a very happy new year! See more
