Gray whales and Humpback whales focus on different types of food, so their baleen is slightly different. You'll notice the Humpbacks is darker, it also gets longer. Each species if baleen whale will have its own slightly unique baleen, but they all work the same and allowing these whales to filter feed. Gray whales are typically bottom feeders, they sift through the mud for invertebrates but occasionally they will skim feed the surface for krill or even run kelp through their baleen for small organisms. They are still migrating south to their warm water breeding grounds! Princessmontereywhalewatching.com ... Here's that amazing Gray Whale video! This yearling circled our boat skim feeding on kelp at the surface. It's really rare for Gray Whales to come this close to the boat in Monterey and even more rare for them to show off their baleen at close range!! This was a trip of a lifetime, dont miss the Gray Whales before they leave book at Princessmontereywhalewatching.com Vc Randy Straka ... #princessmontereywhalewatching #whalewatching #graywhale #whale #rare #natgeo #videooftheday

After a week of bad weather we had a beautiful day with 3 Killer Whales!! The big male named Fatfin popped up right next to our boat giving us great looks. Surprisingly, a couple miles away we saw a juvenile Gray Whale skimming for krill on the surface (a feeding behavior we don't see often from these bottom feeders). It circled our boat and got within 5 feet of us, a video will be uploaded tomorrow so stay tuned.
