Amber Richard, DPT (PT Mindfully) is hosting a great skills-based pain management workshop this weekend for individuals with persistent pain. Sign up and share with your loved ones
Starting off the week on a lighthearted note with last week’s Halloween Shenanigans at our Mill Valley and San Francisco clinics
Leslie Donohue, MPT, brings over 20 years of #PhysicalTherapy experience to our #MillValley clinic. It’s not unusual that people with dance backgrounds make the transition to being a #PhysicalTherapist! We’ve had a number of former dancers on our staff.

Yep, we'd agree that #PhysicalTherapy can be a pretty cool job.
Our #SanFrancisco clinic director, Beth Mickelson, DPT, does seem to have a special magic about her! We are grateful to have her knowledge and intuition guiding our SF #PhysicalTherapy team.
In celebration of #NationalPhysicalTherapyMonth, we'll be sharing musings and stories from our wonderful PT staff at Presidio Sport & Medicine. First up, we have Laurel Stephens, PT, DPT, from our #SanFrancisco office. Fun Fact: Laurel started out as a Physical Therapy Aide at PSM and came back after receiving her doctorate in #PhysicalTherapy from #UCSF.
Our next newsletter is on #Posture! Our #MillValley Physical Therapist, Leslie Donohue, MPT, shares her thoughts on proper alignment. Also, we have a new Physical Therapist on our San Francisco team! Here's some #motivation for your Friday Morning! Reap the benefits of getting "comfortable with the uncomfortable" by starting an exercise routine. "What’s remarkable and encouraging about these studies is that the subjects weren’t exercising at heroic intensities or volumes. They were simply doing something that was physically challenging for them going from no exercise to some exercise; one need not be an elite athlete or fitness nerd to reap the bulletproofing benefits of exercise."
Book a Saturday #PhysicalTherapy appointment at our San Francisco or Mill Valley locations! We've opened up Saturday morning availability 8am-12pm to provide an opportunity to receive lower-risk in-clinic care with 1-2 Physical Therapists in-clinic, and a minimal number of essential staff. Call our clinics (San Francisco: 415-561-6655 or Mill Valley: 415-888-2289), or email us at [email protected] for more information about scheduling.
Having trouble nailing down your #exercise #routine? Check out Chris Chorak's PDF guide to building a well-rounded 30-minute workout!
"When I went in for my very first appointment I was greeted with such care and empathy. When I met with my physical therapist, Laurel, I felt she knew exactly where I was and where I wanted to go in terms of recovery. When I explained what my goals were, along with my concerns, I felt like she truly listened to me. She is incredibly talented and an expert in what she does." Read the rest of this patient's testimonial on our #SanFrancisco #PhysicalTherapist Laurel's page on our website. You can read more about your practitioner's background and interests on our website, or you can get in touch with our Client Services team at [email protected] if you have any other questions.

What does life look like after COVID-19 hospitalization? Studies are showing that recovery still continues after you leave the hospital, and we are here to help. Reach out to [email protected] for any questions regarding scheduling in-clinic care or virtual Telehealth sessions. "At least half of all patients who survive treatment in an intensive care unit will experience at least one of a triad of problems associated with post-intensive care syndrome, or PICS, and this m...ay be true for people recovering from COVID-19 following ICU care. PICS can manifest as problems with physical function, cognition and mental health, according to a fact sheet from the American Thoracic Society."

Meet some of the wonderful people behind PSM! We are going to be doing a series of staff features on our Physical Therapists offering online services, from Physical Therapy appointments to free online workouts. Dorian has been a Physical Therapist at our San Francisco office since 2017. He is a board-certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist, and has certifications in CrossFit Training, Functional Movement Taping, Myofascial Decompression, and Blood Flow Restriction Training. ...As our SF Clinic OSHA officer, Dorian has an essential role in keeping our daily in-clinic operations safe for patients and staff, and has been vehemently researching the up-to-date safety recommendations during the COVID-19 pandemic. How is he handling shelter-in-place? "I have been keeping grounded by following a morning meditation guided by Roger Nolan, MFT, from the yoga studio of my hometown, South Pasadena." (It looks like chocolate cake helps, too.) At this time, Dorian is offering virtual Physical Therapy sessions, and will be launching a weekly free Zoom class on Lower Body Strengthening. DM us to inquire about scheduling, and stay tuned for more details on our online class offerings. @ Presidio Sport & Medicine

Bringing back an oldie but a goodie: "Is there a difference between abdominal strengthening and core stabilization? The answer is yes." #physicaltherapy #core #abs #stabilization #fitness #health #wellness
Meet PSM Transitional Trainer, Ixander Correa! Swipe right to see him demonstrate a simple, but challenging, full-body exercise: Primal Stance Holds. Muscle Groups Targeted: Legs (Quads), Core (Transverse Abdominis), Shoulders (Deltoids and Mid-Scapulae) Recommended: 20-30 second hold, 2-3 reps... 1. Start in a quadruped position with your knees and hands on the floor. 2. Lift your knees above ground, remembering to keep your core engaged, hips squared, and shoulder blades back and down. You should feel your quad muscles firing. Increase difficulty by lifting one foot off the group and holding the position. Repeat with the other side. You can also modify the exercise to challenge the core more by shifting your body forward, or to challenge the lower extremities by leaning back. Ixander has recently opened up more hours in our San Francisco office! DM us or email [email protected] to inquire about scheduling with Ixander. @ Presidio Sport & Medicine

It's never too late to start an exercise regimen! Here's a great read from The New York Times about the benefits of exercise to prevent inflammation as we age. "More important, the findings should not discourage middle-aged or older people who have been inactive from starting to visit the gym, Dr. Trappe says. Even if inflammation gets in the way a bit at first, your muscles will respond and grow, he says, and eventually should start to resemble those of people who have been exercising lifelong."
We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday!

How do you want to spend your golden years? "So many people are living so much longer, in fact, that the myth of what being elderly looks like has changed, says Mike Braham, chief executive officer of Trapollo, a Virginia-based connected-care provider. He says the new image is one of people who are physically active, engaged and focused on finding meaning." I don’t even consider chronological age any more. I don’t know how 86 is supposed to feel, or how I’m supposed to act.... The warranty on my body parts may have expired, but I’ll keep going. Joyce Field See more
