Patellar (knee cap) fractures typically occur when a horse is jumping a fixed obstacle, such as during fox hunting or cross-country competition. The patella is an integral part of the passive stay-apparatus which allows the horse to sleep lightly while standing. It acts as a direct attachment for the quadriceps muscles, as well as an indirect attachment for four other muscles including the biceps femoris which plays an essential role in disengaging the stay-apparatus. When... engaged, these muscles lift the patella and rotate it medially (inward) where it rests passively on top of the medial trochlear ridge of the femur. When the patella is upwardly fixated in this position the stifle is locked, and because of the reciprocal apparatus the hock joint is also rendered incapable of movement. Stay tuned for more information regarding the reciprocal apparatus in a future post. #EquineSportsMedicine #HorseVet #EquineBiomechanics #Lameness #Eventing #PresidioEquine #ACVSMR

"Overall, the researchers saw that within three months, the cyst area had refilled an average of 77% with new bone. Nearly three-fourths of the horses went on to race, including about half that raced already as 2-year-oldswhich are statistics equivalent to horses of the same age without cysts." https://thehorse.com//study-new-bone-cyst-implant-shows-/

Did you know that frangible technology, more specifically the MIM clip device, can be used with cross country table obstacles? The forces involved in rotational falls are initially horizontal, followed by vertical. The MIM clip allows the fence to be driven in the same direction as the horse, ultimately reducing the rotational speed, and giving the horse and rider a better chance of staying on their feet. #LRK3DE #BestWeekendAllYear #LRK3DE2021 #PresidioEquine

"Cross-country fences at all international eventing competitions will use Swedish-made MIMclip frangible technology following the introduction of new FEI rules from January 1. Frangible devices allow cross-country fences to collapse under both forward and upward pressure and are designed to prevent rotational falls, which can cause serious injuries to horses and riders. Several riders in recent years have lost their lives in such falls." https://www.horsetalk.co.nz//frangible-tech-mandatory-cro/

"Although we can perceive that horses are sending messages through their behavior, they’re not actually trying to communicate with us this way, says Fenner. What they’re doing is trying to find ways to avoid the pain or make it go away." https://thehorse.com//bad-behavior-or-is-something-else-g/
