PSA: Cinco de mayo commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over the French forces at the Battle of Puebla on this day in 1862. While it is celebrated in the sta...te of Puebla with speeches and parades, it is not largely celebrated in the rest of the country. The day is more celebrated in the US than in Mexico. Over the years, any sort of cultural significance has been diluted to cinco de drinko understanding of culture. If you’re going to celebrate today, do so respectfully. Ditch the ponchos and sombreros, support Mexican owned businesses and restaurants and make sure you take the time to understand why this day is culturally significant. Celebrate in a way that is respectful to our culture, not mocking it as a costume.
