The Northern Harrier is a slim, long-tailed hawk with a unique owl-shaped face that helps them hear prey hidden under vegetation. These beautiful raptors are the only species of harrier found in North America. Like many hawks, their prey mostly consists of smaller mammals and songbirds but they have been known to take down bigger species like rabbits and ducks! Now in its 20th year, Vida Verde has provided programs for over 12,500 low-income Bay Area students and teachers. We'll be joined by Laura Sears, Executive Director, and Allie Roth, Head of Program for Vida Verde to tell us about their journey and how they are working to address some of the most challenging issues facing equitable environmental education in the region, as well as the little known story of how POST supported them in securing permanent ownership of land for their programs.

We've achieved a new milestone in POST's history: In total, POST has preserved more than 80,000 acres of open space in San Mateo, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties since our founding in 1977! Tilton Ranch, one of the largest remaining intact ranches in the South Bay, is now protected as open space! This is a big win for all the wildlife that live there, and a step forward toward enhancing the resilience of the entire Bay Area. Preserving Tilton Ranch was a high priority for POST in part because of its sheer size of 1,861 acres. It offers a tremendous amount of habitat for a wide range of wildlife and plants. Its proximity to other large habitat areas and its place...ment in the foothills above Coyote Valley amplify its significance to our regional ecosystem.
