International ship crews arriving at the Port of Long Beach and neighboring Port of Los Angeles are receiving COVID-19 vaccinations as part of an ongoing partnership between the Port of Long Beach, the Long Beach Department of Health & Human Services (LBDHHS) and the National Guard. The new initiative ensures the health of workers who deliver essential goods during the ongoing pandemic, utilizing a mobile COVID-19 vaccination unit for those onboard vessels calling on San Pedro Bay. The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners earlier this month approved changes centered around incorporating the international Environmental Ship Index (ESI) into the Port’s Green Ship Incentive Program, which began in 2012. A voluntary system, the ESI identifies seagoing ships exceeding the current emission standards of the International Maritime Organization. The Green Ship Incentive Program has helped improve air quality, encouraging shipping lines to send their newest, cleanest oceangoing vessels to the Port of Long Beach. It's what you've been waiting for, the new bridge is being lit up with nearly 200 energy-saving LED lights beginning this Monday, Dec. 14. The lights will be pre-programmed to mark holidays, such as Independence Day and Christmas, and special occasions, such as the Olympics and Pride Month. COVID-19 restrictions will prevent any on-site celebration or event to mark the first night of lights. Watch the lights being turned on via webcams at newgdbridge.com or at LBTV3.com at 5:30 p.m. For details on how to view the lights visit: http://ow.ly/FWGa50CIpfo

Most Port of Long Beach staff have been working from home since March during the COVID-19 pandemic. But many Port jobs cannot be done remotely, including Port surveying. The Survey team at the Port of Long Beach checks depths in the harbor to support safe navigation and assists Port operations in areas such as utility marking, property rights and construction projects. They have to be onsite in the harbor to perform their jobs including drone operation, measuring, marking and other data gathering.

Congratulations to Beach Environmental Awareness Campaign Hawai'i on the completion of their plastic cap recycling program last month! The goal of the project is to bring awareness to the harm plastic can do to seabirds and other marine life. The project collected more than 1.2 million plastic caps from beaches around Hawaii then cleaned and prepped them to be shipped by Matson to the Port of Long Beach. The container was then loaded onto a Union Pacific Railroad train headed to Tyler, Texas, for recycling. Once they arrived, the caps were recycled into low sulfur fuel through an innovative new technology at New Hope Energy. We are proud to partner with so many great organizations to help protect marine life. Loup To read more about the project and see photos visit: http://ow.ly/hYgS50C9IFE
