It's Tsunami Preparedness Week. Tsunamis are large ocean waves generated by major earthquakes beneath the ocean floor or major landslides into the ocean. Rising to several feet or higher, they can strike the coast with devastating force. People on beaches or in low coastal areas, such as estuaries and rivers, need to be aware that a tsunami could arrive within minutes of a severe earthquake and the danger period can continue for many hours. Tsunamis can occur any time of ye...ar, day or night. Top Tips: To escape a tsunami, go as high and as far as you can ideally to a spot 100 feet above sea level or 2 miles away. Every foot inland or upward may make a difference! If you can see the wave, you are too close for safety. For more information visit: http://ow.ly/C6Qn50E6LPg See more

Thanksgiving day has arrived don’t let our City sewer pipes end up clogged with FOG! Fats, Oils & Grease should never be poured down the drain. Instead, let them cool, pour them into a container with a lid and toss it in the trash. More information on FOG disposal: https://www.ci.port-hueneme.ca.us//Fats-Oils-and-Grease-FOG

HAPPY VETERANS DAY! We would like to recognize and thank all of our Veterans for their service to our country this Veterans Day. Between 2017 and 2020 the numb...er of U.S. Veterans dropped from 20 million to 17.4 million (13%) as World War II Veterans die at a rate of 296 per day. Of the 16 million World War II Vets that served during the greatest threat to humanity that we have ever known, there are only 325,574 World War Two Veterans left today. California is home to the greatest number of Veterans at 1,471,467 (8.5%). There are 40,700 Veterans (3%) in Ventura County and many are right here in Port Hueneme. Port Hueneme is especially proud to have so many Veterans as residents of our City, and we humbly thank each of them for their service and sacrifice.

City of Port Hueneme Public Works Department 06.09.2020

A MESSAGE FROM MAYOR HERNANDEZ: Today on Veterans Day 2020, I invite you to join Americans everywhere in honoring the service and sacrifice of our U.S. military... veterans. On this day, let us stand united in respect for our veterans and celebrate their love of country, their willingness to serve, and their sacrifice for the common good. A recent survey of veterans found that, for many who served in combat, their transition to civilian life has been difficult. For many veterans, the imprints of war are felt beyond their tour of duty. The plight of the veteran can be tragic, and some have lived through hard times that we cannot possibly imagine. Their transition to civilian life can be financially, emotionally, and professionally difficult for them and their families. Veteran suicides, homelessness, post-traumatic stress disorder, and injuries from explosive devices are among the most serious challenges that veterans and families face. Port Hueneme is home to the United States Navy Base Ventura County(NBVC) and we have over one thousand veterans living in our community. Many of these veterans provide an important sense of service and community as they apply their talents and skills to improve the quality of life, we enjoy in Port Hueneme. We have opportunities every day to thank a vet. While we may not be able to shake their hand, we can say thank you for their service and their patriotism. We can also share our gratitude as we go about our daily business and enjoy the freedoms they fought for. We can thank them by educating our children about military service and never forgetting the sacrifices our veterans made on our behalf. However you decide to spend your holiday, please take a moment to say thank you to a veteran. In the meantime, I would like to wish you a happy and safe Veteran’s Day. God Bless our Veterans. God Bless Port Hueneme.
