Porterville Fire Department 04.12.2020

We are pleased to introduce the newest member of the Porterville Fire Department - a 10 week old English Cream Golden Retriever puppy named Gardner. Gardner will be utilized as a therapy dog and will be going through specialized training provided by the California Service Dog Academy to help First Responders cope with stress in the work place. The CSDA has established the Sentinel Program to provide service dogs to veterans and therapy dogs to first responders. Chief Ross Ga...rdner is the name sake for our puppy. Chief Gardner was the first paid fire chief for the Porterville Fire Department and served for a total of 54 years. He had a reputation of taking care of his firefighters above all else. Our little puppy has big shoes to fill but we believe he is up for the task. We would like to give a special thanks to both Matt and Rebecca Corso, the Executive Officer and Animal Behaviorist & Lead Trainer, respectively, of the California Service Dog Academy, and thank them for establishing a great program! #firedog https://californiaservicedogacademy.org/sentinel-dog-progr/ https://californiaservicedogacademy.org/ Gravitas Golden Retrievers See more

Today, Porterville Fire responded to a unique rescue call. Animal control requested a crew for a report of a dog with her head stuck in a wrought iron fence. Using extrication skills honed over countless hours of training and a little bit of innovated thinking, the crew was able to free the dog unharmed. It’s not often we get calls like this, but we’re always ready and able to handle any type of calls that come our way.

Over the past few weeks, Porterville Fire had the pleasure to assist with relief efforts for Camp Nelson, Sequoia Crest, Alpine Village and Cedar Slope and other communities affected by the SQF Complex Fire. The effort was in partnership with AmeriCorps Team Sliver 2, the Ponderosa Fire Brigade , Self Help Enterprise, Tulare County Fire and Shopshire. It could not have been done without the amazing effort from these groups! THANK YOU ALL.

Today we are lowering our flags to half-staff in observance of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service and in rememberance of the nation's fallen firefighters. This is a tough year for the PFD family as we add Ray Figueroa and Patrick Jones, who both passed away in the line of duty earlier this year. We also remember Steve Snow (LODD 1992 heartattack) and Jim Gentry (LODD 1991 heartattack). Please take a moment out of your day to remember all of our nation's fallen firefighters.

*Out of County Update* Porterville Fire still has 8 firefighers deployed throughout the state to assist with one of the busiest fire seasons on record.
