Whitney Portal Road Gets $14 million Upgrade Have you noticed something different about Whitney Portal Road? Even if you’ve been up this famous road in the last 3 years, you may have missed it. But it’s a fact. That historic county road, made famous by Humphry Bogart in High Sierra, received a federally funded multi-million-dollar upgrade. Inyo County won a competitive prizemoney to re-work Whitney Portal Road, from just outside Lone Pine to road’s endthe Whitney Portal ...13 miles distant at 8,000 feet elevation. If you look closely you’ll see what E$14 million can buy. The improvements aren’t dramatic, but they’re significant: : 3’ widening on average, repaving, safety rumble strip, and improvements in slopes, pullouts, drainage, and shoulders. Whitney Portal Road leads toward the highest mountain in the continental US, and surely this fact wasn’t coincidental in Inyo County winning the bid for road money. Too, Whitney Portal Road is the primary access to the Alabama Hills National Recreation and Scienic Areajust west of Lone Pine. not coincidental. Of course, our Portal Preserve subdivision lot owners benefit from these improvements.
