It is also quite sad to know that patients who suffered from Usher Syndrome also have significant progressive loss of vision. The word syndrome means that multiple symptoms occur together, in this case, deafness and blindness. This particular type of visual impairment is known as retinitis pigmentosa. These patients will experience gradual loss of vision starting from the periphery, restricting their visual field causing "tunnel vision"....and eventually complete blindness. Classic presentation of retinitis pigmentosa can be observed during a dilated fundus exam.
