Pomona College Geology Department 14.11.2020

This Spring, reinforcing our bonds outside the classroom, our S2020 GeoCommunity held an anonymous GeoArt Exhibit & Contest. The latter involved a Prize awarded on the basis of popular vote by our department’s students, staff and faculty, as well as a Prize awarded by an external panel of 3 judges. As the competition comes to a close I am pleased to announce the two winners, each of whom will receive a meteorite slice as their Prize! I hope this finds you all safe and well as this difficult pandemic continues we’d love to hear from you!

In the midst of the pandemic that sees us scattered and sequestered, much of my attention as Chair has been focused upon promoting and sustaining community. Last week our terrific liaisons hosted our first e-Liquidus, and we have just mailed out a ‘Geology care package’ to our students. A GeoArt Exhibit & Contest is also underway, with winners to be selected and (suitably geological) prizes to be awarded in mid-April! Faculty are of course working hard to keep their classes, ...a core element of our community, creative and engaging as well as suitably educational during this unusual time: today was ‘silly hat day’ in the Volcanology class, for example, and the number of hats on display proved that our PoCoGeo spirit and sense of fun remain undaunted as we support one another and forge ahead together. If you have the time and inclination, and your circumstances permit, please add a comment below to let us know where you are and how you’re faring. Even more than usual, we would appreciate hearing from you! I hope this finds all of you and yours, as well as your local communities, safe and well!

Geology Alumni: It's almost 2020 and it's been a bit quiet on the Geo Dept Facebook page lately. To catch you up on Department goings on, we're emailing a year end newsletter with information on Woodford-Eckis 2020 and other news. If we don't have your current email and you want a copy, please send an email to Jade Star or Lori's Pomona email addresses. Happy Holidays!
