We at the Poet and Patriot Irish Pub are sad to let you know of the passing of our brother and long-time friend Jonathan Boutelle. The information was passed to... us from others, so we don’t know the official cause or even the exact timing of his death. Jon was a strong union brother and a fighter for freedom, prosperity and the welfare of all working people. You would find Jon at every strike, political demonstration and peace rally without fail. Jon was a true trade unionist. A defender of the poor and downtrodden and he spoke eloquently against the bosses and corporations that control our lives. Jon believed in a better life for all. On October 17, 1989, when the earthquake devastated downtown Santa Cruz, it was Jon who rallied his fellow carpenters and the Building Trades unions to pitch in and build temporary tent structures to replace the dozens of businesses and offices destroyed in the aftermath of that deadly event. It was through his efforts that kept our downtown afloat from economic ruin before the holiday season had even begun. Because we are now confronting the deadly corona virus and unable to come together to honor and memorialize our brother, let us at the least, raise a glass with our families and our partners, in Jon’s name, to dedicate ourselves to mourn, for now, in isolation. But when this terrible virus is behind us, we can again come together, in solidarity, to celebrate and organize ourselves for a better, stronger community, and a better world. As a response to this public health crisis we will be canceling our Tuesday and Saturday open mics until April. Our doors are still open, we have switched to disposable glass wear to protect the health of our employees and THANK GOODNESS we have toilet paper and beer. At this time we’re going to follow the lead of Shaun of the Dead and wait this whole thing out at the pub.
