Progress Update! Platt/Whitelaw is excited to continue working with the Filanc Brown and Caldwell Design-Build Joint Venture (Brown and Caldwell, J.R. Filanc Construction Company) for the design of the City of Escondido’s Membrane Filtration Reverse Osmosis Facility (MFRO). PWA provided Architectural Design-Build Services for the single story, 36,000 SF MFRO Facility and its associated 2,700 SF booster pump station in Escondido, CA. Recycled water from the Hale Avenue Resourc...e Recovery Facility will be routed to the MFRO Facility, which will provide up to 4 million gallons per day of recycled water for the area’s agricultural users, including our local avocado growers! The sustainable MFRO facility will include a rooftop PV system to supplement its power needs. MFRO’s site construction is around the corner and is scheduled to begin this June. #PWAdesign #architecture #recycling #droughtresistant #infrastructure See more

Closing in on completion! Our project, North Pleasant Valley Desalter facility, City of Camarillo Government, is coming together! This building is an integral part of Camarillo’s effort to treat groundwater using Reverse Osmosis Technology. This project will reduce dependence on imported water and increase use of existing groundwater, allowing the City to DOUBLE the current local water supply production. We are so thrilled to be part of this sustainable effort. Estimated completion is July 2021. #PWAdesign #architecture #wastewaterfacilities #droughtresistant #projects Photos courtesy of Brown and Caldwell

Happy Earth Day! We thought we’d share trends on exciting new earth-friendly materialsfrom building materials that store heat, to building materials that clean the air. The advances in eco-friendly materials create new opportunities for architects to reduce the carbon footprint of buildings. Water Works! We love being part of the bigger picture. PWA designs water and wastewater facilities to make each community more resilient to drought and other natural changes. We also implement sustainable design strategies like natural daylight, ventilation, and material choices to reduce the impact on the environment and simultaneously support wellness in the workplace. The Regional Task Force on the Homeless, in partnership with the region’s cities, the County of San Diego - Government, San Diego Housing Commission, and homeless service providers, have developed a coordinated plan to help homeless individuals stay healthy during the global COVID-19 pandemic. As part of that plan, temporary bridge shelters, operated by various nonprofit organizations, are available. In addition, Golden Hall and the San Diego Convention Center are temporarily repurposed as homeless shelters. Platt/Whitelaw is privileged to assist both the City of San Diego and the City of Chula Vista Government in providing some of these shelters. #PWAdesign #homeless #shelter #advocacy #community #sandiego #covid #help #affordablehousing #chulavista Sprung Structures

Kearny High School Construction Tech Academy: #TBT In 2010, PWA adapted Kearny High School’s former auto shop building into a new Construction Tech Academy (CTA). Two of its three large shop classrooms were divided into four separate teaching spaces. Ancillary support spaces, smaller demonstration classrooms, storage rooms, and office were also remodeled leaving one shop classroom intact. The existing outdoor work area was also. Platt/Whitelaw provided scoping and programming and then designed the facility. PWA supported the District’s grant writer in securing State grant funding for the project construction. #TBT #PWAdesigns #architect #buildingschools #educationbuilding #schoolconstruction #sustainable #K12schools #HighPerformanceSchools #ConstructionTech

#TBT New Student Lounge! Associated Students SDSU retained Platt/Whitelaw to complete tenant improvements to a shell space. We added various lounge seating arrangements, a study table with a markerboard wall, interactive tech media table, privacy booths, and seating. In addition, we added another exit/store wall to compensate for added occupancy. The resulting space is magic! #PWAdesign #architect #SDSU #studentlounge Photo by Mike Torrey Photography

Scripps Cottage, donated to SDSU in 1931, is one of the original buildings on campus. The historic building was originally the Campus Women’s Center, and currently operates as an events center. Associated Students SDSU retained PWA to complete renovations to the building in order to increase functionality, maintenance and accessibility. PWA completed rehabilitation of the porch, installed a new HVAC system, a new storage room, and upgrades to the accessible lift, all while maintaining the integrity of the original historic architecture.
