Guys! This.is.awesome. So we recently moved and now have space in the front and back to run around in, hang out AND garden. This is a low maintenance area but those pesky weeds keep popping up through the rocks and mulch. The gardener wanted to use a chemical based weed killer and we were told to not let our son play in the area outside for a day. Errrrrr...no. So I scoured pinterest and found a recipe that uses essential oils. Score! I ran to Home Depot and bought a spraye...r and made the mix, sprayed the areas and bam.. within 6 hrs the weeds had changed from green to DEAD. I really tried to spray the roots too. See the pictures! Here is what I used: -1 gallon of 30% Vinegar -15 ml bottle of Wild Orange -15 ml bottle of Clove Essential Oil -1/4 cup of Dr Bronners liquid soap -1 gallon size sprayer Add all ingredients in sprayer and shake. Be careful to not get surrounding plants you'd like to keep. Note: the 30% vinegar is STRONG so please wear coverings, gloves and tennis shoes as it can burn the skin. The vinegar won't harm the soil but if you really want to prevent weeds from ever coming back, you can add salt to the mixture. I didn't add salt in case we wanted to change up the landscape later as salt can make it hard for plants to grow. Since we've learned that citrus oils are photosensitive, meaning if we wear them topically, it can make our skin more sensitive to the sun and burn easier. So imagine what the oil does to the weeds when left out all day under the hot sun. Burn baby burn. Clove EO is used because of the eugenolconstituent and is known to damage the cellular membranes in plants, therefore helping to kill weeds. Adios!
