It's (almost) Memorial Day! Monday, we will be open from 8am - 6pm in observance of Memorial Day.

Routesetting. Doesn’t it seem like a cool, fun, and creative way to spend a workday? We think so too, but just like most jobs, if you’ve been setting for a while, there are only so many holds, so many wall angles and so many routes you can set before you feel like you’ve done just about everything. Monotony, it happens to all of us. So, to break out of the routine, our setters give themselves challenges. Brandon, John, and Cam (our setters) set with one idea in mind - Everyon...e experiencing the same holds, but climbing different things. The setters set the volumes first - those were the centerpiece. Then, they set all the supporting holds around that centerpiece with the goal of a space where you can climb a V1 or a V6 (or anything in between) and you all have that communal meeting place around those volumes. An intersection where we all meet, so to speak. Are the climbs harder than a "normal" climb? Not really - but they do make you think and work through them. And with a little bit of courage, a little bit of resourcefulness, and a lot of playing around, you'll likely find that you can climb them too! *In this image - each border-color relates to the color of the climb on the wall.

We're migrating our website tonight and that means that planetgranite.com will be down starting at 9pm tonight. This shouldn't affect most things but if you're looking to make a reservation for the next few days - the website will be back up and running tomorrow morning! Thank you so much for your understanding. :)

"I've taught in a variety of spaces these last 13 years; what I noticed about teaching to climbers that's unique is their "beginners' minds." Meaning they come to class without much expectation, less ego, and are ok with fumbling around in their movements and emotions. A beginner's mind really sets them up for success. My theory is that as climbers we are used to falling and we don't see it as failure but simply a part of the process." - Lisa Skaff (yoga teacher, @planetgr...anitepdx and MindBody Online) For February, Lisa's classes will focus on shoulders but you can expect flow practices full of movement diversity. So bring your beginner's mindset to Vinyasa: Power Flow at 9am PT every Saturday on MindBody! Link below to sign up! It's near, it's here; it's the end of the year! And what a year it has been! Today, for #throwbackthursday, we are looking back at 2020. This year has been a struggle and it is easy to be bogged down by the disappointments and clipped hopes we may have experienced but that means that it is even more important to dig deep and celebrate all the things you did accomplish. While it may not be as much as you have in previous years, accomplishments are still something to be proud o...f. Some years are like that; you don't get as much done as you would like for reason - time restraints, an injury, a global pandemic. We'd love to hear what you are proud of from 2020 and what you are looking forward to next year! Here's hoping we can push harder in 2021 and build on what we did in 2020!

We doubt anyone really takes a good bolt for granted; we are all happy to see good hardware outside. But, honestly, most of us probably won't ever experience what it takes to replace a bolt and as Jim Herson puts it, "the energy that goes into putting to put in a bolt...is just backbreaking" If you are interested in being a bolt replacement volunteer, we can likely help put you in touch with someone but since most of us won't be doing that, we can say thank you to the volunte...ers who are putting their back into it by making sure they have all the bolts they could ever need. Donate to help the @asca_bolt_replacement get bolts into the hands of volunteers! Donations are being matched up to $20,000 until the end of the year! Let's see how many bolts we can help replace! https://www.safeclimbing.org/

We are counting down the days until we can have you all back into the gym for in-person yoga and fitness classes. And while we wait for that time when we can all celebrate in the same room doing kettlebell swings or downward dog, we'd love to help you continue towards your goals together and maybe add a little routine into otherwise hectic lives. Our instructors are doing live instruction with all our best yoga and fitness classes online. Check out this weekend's classes from Jazmin, MK, and Lisa! https://hubs.ly/H0C3Cx70

"Oftentimes that experience [climbing outdoors] relies on a trust in safe, fixed protection". We wish that we could always rely on the hardware outside. That there were no bad bolts or old hardware on their last leg, but the reality is that there is no central organization ensuring that bolts are being replaced well and regularly. Most bolts are placed by non-profit groups and volunteers whenever they can and they need help - Bodies to help do the replacements and also the h...ardware- lots and lots of hardware. And the hardware is expensive. That is where @asca_bolt_replacement comes in - they get that hardware to the volunteers and non-profits who are replacing them (and do some of the replacements themselves). They also keep a pretty exhaustive list of where their bolts are going! The American Safe Climbing Association is looking for our help to get bolts to those doing the work. They have donors who are matching anything up to $20k until the end of December so let's help if we can. Head over to https://www.safeclimbing.org/ to learn more and donate! #americansafeclimbingassociation #badbolts #climbinghardwarereplacement #sportclimbing #tradclimbing #rockclimbing #climbingismypassion #coloradoclimbing #utahclimbing #californiaclimbing #safeclimbing #climbingstewardship #planitegranite #climbingvolunteer #givebacktoclimbing

Planet Granite Santa Clara 22.11.2020

Well, 2020 has been...a year. And a lot of us are ready for it to be over. BUT, we have an alternative to just writing off the rest of December. There are still 24 days left until 2021 which means you could: - Put 3 more weeks into wrapping up your current goals - Get a 3-week head start on your 2021 goals - Keep your routine and get 3 weeks further than you would have otherwise - Change up your routine and get 3 weeks of new fun in! ... And, if any of these appeal to you, we have a new On Demand library of classes along with our daily live classes so even if you can't make one of the live ones, you still can still take a class. https://info.planetgranite.com/live-stream

For many, the holiday season is a time to pause and take a moment to reflect on what we’re thankful for. This year, we’re grateful for this incredible community--your continued support means the world to us. Your membership means that we’re able to open our doors again, once local and county officials allow. So thank you. When we were open, so many of you were doing your part to keep the community safe. Thank you to those who adjusted your schedule to climb with us during off...-hoursyou made room for those who didn’t have the flexibility in their schedules! And thank you to everyone who wore masks even when you were cruxing out on a move. Thank you for your patience during one of the most challenging times we’ve faced. Thank you to those who are financially able to keep your membership on even though our doors closed. It’s not always going to be like this and we can’t wait to celebrate when that happens. Happy Thanksgiving to those of you who are celebrating it!

The economic toll of COVID has been felt by many businesses and we are no different. Another way to help support not only us but all California climbing gyms would be to write to your local and state officials (https://ciccoalition.org/action/ sample template) and ask them to work with the California Indoor Climbing Coalition. These officials may include Governor Gavin Newsom and Acting Director of the California Department of Public Health Sandra Shewry, among others.

Friends We’ve been actively tuned into news and reports and, as some of you may have seen, our county is moving into the purple tier. Unfortunately, this means we are closing our doors effective tonight, November 16, until our county is moved back into the red tier. Belmont and San Francisco will remain open but at reduced capacity. They will be moving back to accepting reservations while their counties are in the red tier. We’ve sent an email to all our members on... so please check your inbox for more information. We may not be able to train together in our gym, but we can still train online together via yoga and fitness classes on our new platform. Thanks to two-way video, you’ll experience the same support, interaction, and accountability of a class at the gym. Check them out on our website. We’re incredibly sad to close our doors again, however, we will be monitoring the situation closely and will keep you updated as we know more. Thanks so much for your support as we navigate such strange times. While we are closed, we’ll still be sending out our newsletter so make sure you are signed up so you can get reopening news and to find out what our staff and community are up to. https://info.planetgranite.com/newsletter-signup

Sometimes making a commitment is hard - whether to go on a date with someone, whether to put caramel sauce on your ice cream, or whether to get a full gym membership. We have the same dilemmas- except for the caramel one- that is an obvious yes from us. And the membership one? We've got you covered on that too! We have flexible memberships options like our short term memberships for 1, 2, or 3 months, punch passes, or online memberships. Check them out! https://hubs.ly/H0zRb6X0
