We doubt anyone really takes a good bolt for granted; we are all happy to see good hardware outside. But, honestly, most of us probably won't ever experience what it takes to replace a bolt and as Jim Herson puts it, "the energy that goes into putting to put in a bolt...is just backbreaking" If you are interested in being a bolt replacement volunteer, we can likely help put you in touch with someone but since most of us won't be doing that, we can say thank you to the volunte...ers who are putting their back into it by making sure they have all the bolts they could ever need. "Oftentimes that experience [climbing outdoors] relies on a trust in safe, fixed protection". We wish that we could always rely on the hardware outside. That there were no bad bolts or old hardware on their last leg, but the reality is that there is no central organization ensuring that bolts are being replaced well and regularly. Most bolts are placed by non-profit groups and volunteers whenever they can and they need help - Bodies to help do the replacements and also the h...ardware- lots and lots of hardware. And the hardware is expensive. That is where @asca_bolt_replacement comes in - they get that hardware to the volunteers and non-profits who are replacing them (and do some of the replacements themselves). They also keep a pretty exhaustive list of where their bolts are going! The American Safe Climbing Association is looking for our help to get bolts to those doing the work. They have donors who are matching anything up to $20k until the end of December so let's help if we can. Mental Training-On and Off the wall Regional Assistant Director of Programs in the Bay Area, Jesse, gives insight on how to enhance your training on the wall for Peak Performance. He suggests there are three important areas to improve climbing: Breathing - controls mindset, manages stress levels, amplifies physical coordination, and determines your time on the wall.... Body Language - where your eyes are looking, shape of shoulders, alignments in joints, nonverbal cues for hesitation. Self talk - while an abstract concept, motivate yourself to keep going and smile, positively reinforcing your efforts can/will go a long way. When you put all these three tools together, you get the ability to control your intensity level. Once you are able to be in control, you decide when to go from 5% to 100% in effort within a couple of moves when the climb calls for it. PG Belmont Gym Update! It’s been a wait let us tell you. However wait is finally over! With recent updates from our county, we are going to be opening this Friday, September 25! We will begin taking reservations starting tomorrow, Thursday, September 24!... Virtual Event Alert We are honored to present our first Virtual Event! Join us on September 18th from 5 - 7 pm PST for an evening of Celebration for Hispanics/Latinx in the outdoor community! This virtual event consists of a fundraiser for MERO students, watch party - Pretty Strong and a live Q&A with one of the strong climbers from the film, @feryrodriguez_climbing ! We will be also accepting donations if you have the means, a suggested $10 donation supporting the students of MERO for school supplies as they switch to online learning and care packages to their families.
