TOMORROW! Virtual Taste of Flight Happy Hour! https://one.bidpal.net/poftasteofflight/welcome October 24 at 5pm. Tickets still available to our exclusive online event We’re putting the finishing touches on our online event scheduled for this coming Saturday, October 24, 2020. The fun begins at 5:00pm when we host our Happy Hour with the making of the famed Cocktail Lafayette a drink favored by the American flyers who comprised the famed French squadron of World War ...One. We’ll then share a toast together in their honor. Filmmakers Darroch Greer and Paul Glenshaw will then take us on their amazing journey to create their new feature-length documentary, Lafayette Escadrille which tells the story of these brave Americans who fought for freedom in the early years of the First World War. The Lafayette Escadrille was an all-volunteer squadron of American Airmen who fought with France prior to the U.S. entry in World War I. In total, more than 200 Americans were part of the squadron, and 68 members died in battle. Darroch and Paul will give us a glimpse into the fascinating world of documentary filmmaking and how this project led them to a number of famous locales and more importantly, introduced them to a number of people who are directly descended from the actual members of the fighter squadron as well as the many French citizens who still honor the Airmen to this day. Throwback Thursday! We're throwing it back... waaaaaay back before Planes of Fame existed! Here's a neat look at 'Cal Aero Field' as it was home for thousands of war-weary aircraft just after World War 2. With the snow-capped San Bernardino mountains in the distance, who can name some of the various aircraft in this shot?

** VIRTUAL TASTE OF FLIGHT ** https://one.bidpal.net/poftasteofflight/welcome Darroch Greer and Paul Glenshaw, the filmmakers of 'Lafayette Escadrille' from our upcoming Virtual Taste of Flight Happy Hour livestream video being shown this coming Saturday, October 24 (Tickets: https://one.bidpal.net/poftasteofflight/custom/custom1 - All proceeds of this event (and the Silent Auction) go to the Museum's Education Programs.) have givens us to share with you this 20 minute previe...w of their incredible documentry. The Lafayette Escadrille was the name of the French Air Force unit during the First World War composed largely of American volunteer pilots flying French-built fighter aircraft. It was named in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette, French hero of the American Revolutionary War. The filmmakers will begin the special October 24th event by taking everyone through how to mix their own 'Lafayette Cocktail' (They claim that the drink was the favourite of members of the Lafayette Escadrille when they were on leave and would visit the New York Bar in Paris) and make a toast. After the toast, they will tell the story of what led them to make the film, how the filming introduced them to many of the family members of the Americans in the Lafayette Escadrille, and how they went to over 40 locations in France, including original airfields that the Escadrille flew from to shoot the documentary.

Today we remember the legacy of an incredible aviation pioneer, flying ace, test pilot, and multi-war veteran... Chuck Yeager. Yeager passed away yesterday evening leaving an incredible service career and long-lasting contributions to the aviation industry. Best known for being the first to officially break the sound barrier in the Bell X-1 in 1947, he was a P-51 pilot during World War 2 where he was credited for shooting down 11.5 enemy aircraft including the ME-262. Many people have met Yeager over the years or have seen this record-setting aircraft in museums, what memories do you have of this aviation legend?

Planes of Fame Air Museum 19.05.2020

79 years ago today, America was changed forever. On an island 3,836 miles away from the continental United States during a sleepy Sunday morning, the peace and stillness was suddenly interrupted by the sound of explosions, gunfire, and hundreds of aircraft. Once the smoke cleared, 4 battleships were lost, 13 ships damaged, nearly 400 aircraft destroyed or damaged, and 2,335 lives lost. We remember those who perished during the attack on Pearl Harbor, thrusting America into World War 2.

Planes of Fame Air Museum 04.05.2020

Fireball Friday! Did you know we have a pretty rare aircraft (well, among many!) with an interesting history! Check out this great documentary on the Ryan FR Fireball, which we have the only example left in the world on display in our Enterprise hangar. A unique aircraft that combined a prop engine and a jet engine! Business in the front, party in the back... maybe they should have called it the Ryan FR Mullet?

- https://one.bidpal.net/poftasteofflight/welcome This year, we're doing Taste of Flight a bit different... we have two online parts taking place during this first-ever virtual event! The first is a "Happy Hour" which is scheduled to begin at 5:00pm on Saturday, October 24 in lieu of our normal Taste of Flight in-person gala. The second is an online Silent Auction running today through October 30th. : This year, we'...re trying something different and we've engaged two filmmakers to help us along. Darroch Greer and Paul Glenshaw are helping us by presenting a preview of their upcoming documentary entitled, "Lafayette Escadrille." Lafayette Escadrille was the name of the French Air Force unit during the First World War composed largely of American volunteer pilots flying French-built fighter aircraft. They were named in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette, a French hero of the American Revolutionary War. The filmmakers will begin the event by teaching everyone to mix their own 'Lafayette Cocktail' and have a toast. They claim that the drink was the favorite of members of the Lafayette Escadrille when they were on leave and would visit the New York Bar in Paris. After the toast, they will tell the story of what led them to make the film, how the filming introduced them to many of the family members of the Americans in the Lafayette Escadrille, and how they went to over 40 locations in France, including original airfields that the Escadrille flew from to shoot the documentary. They also hope to have a few of these family members on the Zoom call. Tickets to the "Virtual Taste of Flight Happy Hour" are just $25.00 each and can be purchased here: https://one.bidpal.net/poftasteofflight/ticketing. All proceeds of this event (and the Silent Auction) go to the Museum's Education Programs. About a year ago today, we sent our SBD Dauntless, TBM Avenger, F4U Corsair, and F-86 Sabre out to MCAS Miramar for their airshow. We wish we could have been flying in the show this year, which would have been this weekend. What airshow are you most excited for next year? (aside from our airshow, of course!)

No plans for this weekend? Why not come spend a few hours here at the Planes of Fame Air Museum? You never know what you might see, and with our Outdoor Experience still in effect you can still get up close to the airplanes 10am-4pm this weekend! Check out this great photo of our F-8 Crusader and A-7 Corsair II out in the Jet area, a great spot for photographers to get artsy photos of these long-retired warriors. Photo by Greg Pierson!

Several people asked about how our B-50 'Lucky Lady II' (from our last post) mid-air refueled using the grapple line hose system. Here's a great video from 1949 showing our B-50 from that historical day with some insight into how it was done! Video from British Pathé.

Yesterday was the 78th anniversary of the first flight of the B-29! The XB-29 (Boeing Model 345) took off from Boeing Field, Seattle. While we don't have a B-29, we do have the B-50 (post-war revision of a B-29) "Lucky Lady II" that is famous for being the first airplane to circle the world non-stop with aerial refueling!

Craig Bryant captured our newly finished F8F Bearcat going out for a test flight over the weekend! You never know what you might see fly when visiting the museum! We are open this week Thursday through Sunday 10am-4pm.
