Welcome to the CO-OP family <3 Following in the footsteps of my family My grandfather, Arturo Sbragia, grew up in Guamo, a small village outside of Lucca, Italy. For generations, the family grew olives and made oil for their personal use. Growing up, I heard stories of the many marvels of olive oil and, of course, homemade vinegar. It was perhaps those stories which led me down the path to produce olive oil in the purest of Tuscan traditions. We love keeping it local here at the Co-op! <3 These 100% Organic California Extra Virgin Olive Oils come from Mad Dog Mesa Olive Oil Their ranch is located in Coloma on the Georgetown Divide at about 1,800 feet. Looking to the North, they see Mt. Murphy and Dutch Creek Canyon and to the West they overlook the Coloma Gold Discovery State Park. Their first olive trees were imported from France and Italy in 1999 and planted in 2001. They currently have over 3,100 olive trees... comprised of about 51 different varieties (primarily French). Straight from Italy, the newest addition to the Placerville Food Co-op's expanding wine department! Moncaro Winery’s organic wines. The winery is owned by an Italian co-op of small farmers. The Moncaro co-op formed to empower Italian farmers and free them from big land owners. By banding together in a co-op, the farmers could sell their own grapes for a good price, working their own land and being paid fairly for their work.... Each year, co-op owners sell all their grapes to the co-op, which is committed to buying them. Quality standards determine the price, which is higher than the market price. The owners elect a board to run the co-op. Moncaro farmers have been cultivating organic grapes since 1980. The co-op works on innovative projects to help the environment in collaboration with the University of Ancona; current projects include studying new cultivation techniques (using seashell extracts in place of copper on the fields) and finding new production techniques to reduce the use of sulfites. They use an innovative system to recycle waste water and also recycle other materials, and use renewable energy at the winery. And they are certified as a socially responsible work environment. The co-op stocks 5 varietals: Pinot Grigio and Nero D'Avola from Sicily Sangiovese, a Rosato and Verdicchio from Le Marche. The Nero D'Avola from Sicily will amaze you! The most important red wine grape in Sicily and is one of Italy's most important indigenous varieties. It is named after Avola in the far south of Sicily, and its wines are compared to New World Shirazes, with sweet tannins and plum or peppery flavours. Le Marches region is located in the Central area of the country, bordered by Emilia-Romagna and the republic of San Marino to the north, Tuscany to the west, Umbria to the southwest, Abruzzo and Lazio to the south and the Adriatic Sea to the east.
