On February 11th, Placer High sent 7 warriors to boys DIII Regionals. 1 freshman 106 lb Leland Rodriguez, 5 sophomores Enzo Gallo, Ian Reynolds, Jack Steed-Spaid, Jason Lee and Sean Fleming and 1 junior captain, Grant Eklund. Eklund's leadership proved crucial in showing this young team how far they could go. Out of that crew, Leland pinned his way to third place. Grant took his opponents to the deep water to use his hard conditioning to secure 5th place. Enzo, with that true... Hillmen warrior heart finished 6th, all qualifying for masters. Ian Reynolds took 9th to qualify as an alternate. Not to be outdone, sophomore Breanna Packheiser becomes the first female wrestler to make it to masters by pinning, throwing and leg riding her way to 4th place. Congratulations to 1st to 4th place wrestlers moving on to Divisions!! The Hillmen brought 10 varsity, 1 girl and 1 JV warrior to the FVL Championships. In a thrilling overtime match, freshmen Leland Rodriguez defeated Ponderosa with a blast double to take first! This earned him the title of FVL MVP. Sophomore Enzo Gallo showed his grit as he fought his way to an upset and took second. Ian Reynolds closed the gap on his Oakmont opponent after defeating Ponderosa to finish s...econd as well. Captain Grant Eklund, a junior survived 2 slams to defeat Nevada Union to capture third place. Surprising the FVL crowd, but not the Placer fans, sophomore Jason Lee took 4th and is also advancing to divisions. Our lone JV competitor sophomore Aaron Berman took second, missing first by a point. Our lone female competitor, sophomore Breanna Packheiser teched and pinned her way through the competition to take first. She will be advancing to girls regionals next week as well. Placer also had three wrestlers, sophomores Jack Steed-Spaid and Sean Fleming, and junior Cole Upton, take 5th which qualifies them as alternates to go to divisions.
