Several pediatricians have reached out to me for talking points on the COVID19 vaccine and easily digestible (but grounded in science) answers to common concern...s. Only 49% of parents plan on vaccinating their kids in the U.S. This means we (public health professionals, pediatricians, friends of parents) have a lot of work to do. What do you focus on? A recent Lancet study found that providing information about the personal benefits of the COVID19 vaccine reduce hesitancy MORE than providing information about collective benefits. Especially among strongly vaccine hesitant persons. Among people who are mildly hesitant about vaccination, there is no difference between messaging strategies. I put together a 1-pager of top 7 reasons parents are hesitant with evidence-based discussion points. Here is a low resolution copy. If you’re a paying subscriber, reply to this email and I can send you the PDF copy so you can print or post or use as doodling paper. Hope this is helpful! In today’s societal climate, it’s imperative that children are included in conversations on important topics like racism and social justice. But breaking down ...those conversations in a kid-friendly way can be easier said than done, which is why Disney Junior is releasing a new animated short series called Rise Up, Sing Out later this year. Through musical shorts from Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson and Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter, both members of the Grammy-award-winning hip-hop group The Roots, Rise Up, Sing Out will touch on topics such as race, racism, and social justice, Disney Junior shared in a press release on Tuesday. The series also promises to deliver inspiring and empowering messages on diversity and inclusion. It is an honor to work with the Disney Junior team to help create a series of shorts that will empower and uplift the future generations in the way we know best, through music, Thompson and Trotter, who are both executive producers on the show, said in a joint statement. We hope these shorts will encourage the young audience to recognize and celebrate our differences as human beings while learning the tools to navigate real-world issues of racial injustice. Latoya Raveneau, who is also an executive producer and show-runner for the series, called the project a surreal experience. I am beyond excited to finally be able to share this amazing project I've been working on over at Disney Jr, Raveneau shared on her Instagram page on Tuesday. This is my first time Show Running and to be able to do so on a project this impactful and personal... talking about race and social justice...with absolute industry titans like @theroots has been SURREAL to say the least. Raveneau is also working on Disney+’s The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder. Disney Junior teamed up with both The Roots and The Conscious Kid, a non-profit organization dedicated to equity and promoting healthy racial identity development in youth, for the series. The nonprofit will be consulting on the series and will also help develop a viewing companion guide for parents. Academy Award-winning animation studio Lion Forge Animation, which produced Matthew Cherry’s Hair Love, is also involved with the series. Racism and race are still touchy topics that some parents still struggle to discuss with their kids, but the animated series aims hopes it can help start some meaningful conversations. We recognize that many kids are experiencing a multitude of feelings around what’s happening in our world today and know that many families are struggling with how to discuss sensitive issues around race, Joe D’Ambrosia, senior vice president of original programming and general manager of Disney Junior, said in a statement. Our goal with these shorts is to open up the conversation and provide families with the tools and knowledge to address these important topics with their preschoolers in an age-appropriate manner through music and relatable kid experiences. Deciding to become anti-racist parents is the first step in opening up that conversation. Also recognizing the power of our voices. Shows like Rise Up, Sing Out is another positive step. More series like these for our children, please!

I’m caught in the frenzy of the great catch-up. The great you-could-be-doing-more story of motherhood. Is it any doubt we are just tired? There’s no rest for th...e weary. Because if I wake in the middle of the night, it starts again. And then the alarm sounds at 5:45, and next thing you know, there I am, standing by the coffee maker praying the brew speeds up. When they were babies and toddlers I would soothe my tired self with words of when they are older I will sleep but now that they are older I’m still awake. Checking for them to return home, reminding them to turn out the lights, checking phones into my room at night so no-one is watching HULU at 3am. And if they are, those night owl teens, then there I am, awake again. And the list, the tally, the race starts again. Most of my days are spent diffusing problems that my kids have deemed as emergencies. It doesn’t matter that the time on the computer isn’t equal to me, but it sure does to my kids. So instead of figuring other things out, I’m dealing with mini-wars of justice between them. And then I’m problem-solving as well. Not remembering the math my math teachers told me I would need to learn because I would use it in life. Nope, nope, nope. So instead, there I am trying to use Google, typing in math problems hoping for an answer. We have to evaluate and sort out and problem solve and manage and negotiate and mediate and invent all day long. And all of that problem solving is exhausting. Sometimes I just want two plus two equals four. Or the washing machine to not break. Or the kids to not care that someone got what seems to be 2.48 grams more ice-cream. Or for me to not get frustrated with the school pick-up line. It doesn’t seem to be the motherhood story I signed up for. But haha, it’s a good thing we go in blind and oblivious to the job that states, this job requires no sleep, unending hours, your ability to solve problems and a crisis at 4:13 am, for you to drive around constantly on the same routes, create meals, and love always. You’ll be dealing with people that once loved you but as they grow older will start to look at you like you’re an alien creature and one day they’ll tell you that they hate you but you are not to take it personally. And oh yeah, don’t forget yourself. Maybe the reason we’re tired and I’m tired is because this is just what motherhood actually is about. (probably not the answer you’re looking for. But who has time to read about a thirty-four-step program to solving mom tired because I think I’d fall asleep even if I tried to read.) And the more we just accept that the more we can be proud of ourselves for all that we do. That’s what I’m telling myself as I sit here writing, even though the tally sheet of stuff to do is racing through my head. I do know this, and this is important I get more and more tired and more and more cranky and less and less able to figure stuff out when I put myself on the back burner. And it is so easy to do. I’m the queen of I’ll do that tomorrow. The problem is this in the almost 22 years I’ve been a mom that tomorrow never comes unless I GRAB IT. So you have to learn that too. You are IMPORTANT. And if you want to have an hour of sleep here and there and time with your friends at Starbucks and a break YOU HAVE TO BE THE ONE TO SCHEDULE IT. No one will do it for you. You’re so important. So tonight or whenever you read this, make sure as you’re going through your list of stuff, to add yourself to the list. You know what? You may be tired, but if you mix up those letters it also says TRIED. Don’t ever forget that. Maybe you are so tired because you tried today. And doesn’t that matter? And in the end, doesn’t that matter the most? From one tired mom who tried to you. ~Rachel #findingjoy

Gotta love the love! #Repost @livingwellwithl Half of you are going to read this & think Yasss girl & the other half are going to say What the actual heck So here it goes: I’m eating my placenta. ... Did you know that most mammals consume their placenta after giving birth? While some people are game for adding pieces to a smoothie, I opted to have my placenta processed & encapsulated. While research is slim if there is any true benefits (opposed to a placebo effect), many people report positive feedback when it comes to their mood & balancing those hormones that often leave a new mom feeling anxious or sad. A few reported reasons to consider consuming the placenta: - Reduces time of postpartum bleeding - Replenishing the hormones lactogen & prolactin to aid in milk supply - Replenishing iron - Balancing hormones until your body gets back on track, helping maintain a stable mood after the drop off of all the amazing pregnancy hormones - Help return uterus to pre-birth size - Consistent flow of oxytocin to promote a happy mood Again, there’s no solid evidence that placenta consumption makes a considerable difference in postpartum health. However, as someone who has a history of anxiety & depression, paying to have my placenta encapsulated was a small price to pay compared to navigating mental health struggles postpartum. And YES, you hire a professional to do thisplease do not DIY this! You can do your own research if you’re questioning why that is. Personally, in the week period before I started taking my placenta pills I was having meltdowns every evening where I would just feel sadcommonly referred to as Baby Blues. Since starting the pills, I haven’t had a full on meltdownmoments of sadness and frustration, sure, but not meltdowns. In fact, there was even a day I was struggling & my husband said have you taken your placenta pills today? I hadn’t. For me, I’m happy I requested to have my placenta saved after birth (typically the hospital disposes it as bio-waste) & had it encapsulated. Worth the money! So now you either think I’m a total hippy or pretty smartno need to tell me #livingwellwithl

It's been a month since our last COVID-19 research update, and we are pleased to be able to send you another freely accessible research update compiled by our t...eam! The full research update was emailed to our newsletter subscribers and is also archived on our COVID-19 resource page (evidencebasedbirth.com/covid19). This week we share results from the first U.S. report of infant outcomes through 8 weeks of age, findings from a quality improvement initiative to evaluate mother-infant bonding, conclusions from an expert review on the impact of stress on pregnancy outcomes and non-drug approaches to reduce stress, and links to more interesting research that has come out over the last few weeks. Today’s questions (answered in a Q&A section at the bottom of the email) include: Is there any evidence that social isolation is harmful for young children? At what age do children need socialization for normal development? Are there any new recommendations on screen time limits for young children during the pandemic? Don't forget that our COVID-19 resource & pregnancy page includes archives of these newsletters (including past Q & A’s), a sample informed consent form to refuse mother-newborn separation, our virtual doula directory, a free birthing crash course, a link to find our comprehensive EBB Childbirth Class online, and other info you might find useful.
