IMPACTED BY A DISASTER? NOVEMBER 8: DEADLINE FOR WOOLSEY FIRE RELIEF The Los Angeles County Assessor’s Office offers significant savings to taxpayers whose properties have been destroyed or have sustained a minimum of $10,000 in damage by filing a Misfortune and Calamity (M&C) claim for property tax relief. Through this M&C process, homeowners may also transfer their base-year values to a replacement home of equal or lesser value. The savings stays in effect usually until the... property is restored. The time frame for filing an M&C claim is 12 months from the date of the natural disaster that caused the damage, which could be an earthquake or flood, among others. As an example, the Woolsey Fire broke out on Nov. 8, 2018 and the deadline for that disaster is Nov. 8 of this year. Although the Assessor’s Office proactively reaches out to property owners to notify them of their eligibility for Misfortune & Calamity relief, state law mandates that each property owner submit this claim in order to receive relief.
