Pine United Methodist Church, San Francisco 16.01.2021

SUNDAY, JAN. 10, 2021: Join us for this Worship Service in which we talked about baptism: our own experiences, views of what Baptism means for our spiritual lives, and the role of community. Join us at from home with some water and feel free to add any other healing elements to it (i.e. essential oils, salt, herbs, etc.). The Scripture Reading was from Mark 1:4-11, accompanied by these Reflection Prompts for our collective Message:... 1. Our reading today centers on a supernatural event happening on earth, in plain sight. What might this text be telling us about the connections between faith, mystery, and action? What role might the Spirit have? 2. Baptism is one of two sacraments in the UMC. For UMs, baptism centers around community and freedom, rather than purity from sin. What have you been taught about baptism? 3. Are there any truths about God, faith, or your relationships that are being revealed to you through today’s text? If so, how are you being called to respond to these truths or to live into these truths? Content List: 0:00 - Intro 0:05 - Centering Music: "Morning Has Broken" 2:02 - Welcome 4:49 - Call to Worship & Opening Prayer 7:08 - Hymn "Spirit Song" 9:31 - Scripture Reading | Liturgist: Kay In line with Sunday's theme, we watched this video created through a workshop done at the Indigenous Youth Leadership Conference: https://youtu.be/dB6t5eJ3Crs 11:41 - Collective Message 39:35 - Prayers of the People & The Lord's Prayer 43:21 - Announcements 47:30 - Offertory | Special Music was Tracy Chapman's "Change": https://youtu.be/bukXKdzyGEY 48:31 - Remembering Our Baptism 54:46 - Hymn "How Great Thou Art" 58:00 - Benediction & Passing the Peace 58:31 - Bonus Material from Fellowship God's peace be with you! Join us for this Worship Service where, in the spirit of remembering Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we talk about what it is to be called by God and remember others who answer God's prophetic call to social justice. Join us by remembering when God has called you and those who inspire and support you following your call. The Scripture Reading was from 1 Samuel 3:1-20, accompanied by these Reflection Prompts for our collective Message: 1. From our reading today, does awakeni...ng have to do with being called? What does it mean to be called or to have a call? 2. Does answering a call from God always feel easy or difficult? What experiences do you have in responding to a call and what moved you, or supported you, to act? 3. Are there any truths about God, faith, or your relationships that are being revealed to you through today’s text? If so, how are you being called to respond to these truths or to live into these truths? As people of faith, we are called to learn and work towards right relationship with others, especially in resistance of injustices like racism. We cannot allow injustice to obscure our own ability to recognize our collective identity as Beloveds of God. May this equip those parenting future generations of Asian Americans.

While our calendars would have us believe that the Magi reached Jesus just days after his birth, the journey from present-day Iran and India would have taken fa...r longer months if they hardly rested. Years by many accounts, when Jesus was already a toddler. The journey of the Magi was one of deep, long-trusting faith. The journey before us to show God love by partnering in the Spirit's work is a long and worthy one. Do not be discouraged by the long road ahead. Image is of a picture of a night sky above the desert. In the foreground are the words: epiphany takes time and it's worth it.

SUNDAY, JAN. 3, 2021: Join us for our first Sunday Worship Service of 2021! It is also Epiphany Sunday and the first Sunday of the month, which means we celebrate Communion with one another. Feel free to join us from home with your own elements (some sort of "bread" and "wine"). The Scripture Reading was from Matthew 2:1-12, accompanied by these Reflection Prompts for our collective Message:... 1. What are the threats - materially, politically, ideologically, etc. - to which King Herod is responding? 2. The Magi are met with an important choice - to travel the path they had planned or to take another road. Have there been times in your life that you came to turning points or where your intuition led you towards taking a path you never thought you would? 3. Are there any truths about God, faith, or your relationships that are being revealed to you through today's text? If so, are they pointing to any shifts for yourself, our church community, or our work? Content List: 0:00 - Intro 0:10 - Centering Music: "Auld Lang Syne" 1:36 - Welcome 3:33 - Call to Worship & Opening Prayer 5:55 - Hymn "What Child Is This" 7:46 - Scripture Reading | Liturgist: Margaret 10:07 - Collective Message 35:45 - Prayers of the People & The Lord's Prayer 40:18 - Announcements 43:16 - Offertory | Special Music was Kirk Franklin's "We Three Kings": https://youtu.be/dxTxu3A1f7k 44:24 - Great Thanksgiving & Holy Communion 49:48 - Hymn "Love Came Down at Christmas" 51:09 - Benediction & Passing the Peace God's peace be with you! Happy New Year! We’re back to our regular schedule! Join us on Sunday at 11am PST as we focus on the Magi AKA the Wise Men. Were they all men? Why would these n...on-Jewish and non-Christian people journey such a long way to pay homage to the Liberator of a people not their own? What convinced them to take a road that would protect baby Jesus from the Empire? Welcome to the season of Epiphany. HOW TO JOIN: Register at tinyurl.com/pinesundayworship or DM. THIS SUNDAY, OCT. 25, 2020: We continued on in our theme for the month (details below). The text we focused on was 1 Thessalonians 2:1-8. Video to deepen our theme was: https://youtu.be/X5H80Nhmn20. And during our Offering time, we viewed this: https://youtu.be/RY2fr13ibFc. THROUGHOUT THE MONTH OF OCTOBER: The Reconciling Ministries Network, of which Pine UMC is a part, is joining in their new campaign - Rooted & Rising: RMN’s Commitment to Center Intersectional Justice and E...quity. We will also be framing our worship around Paul’s letters this month. Paul's writings have been historically used by some Christians to exclude and perpetuate discrimination against marginalized people, such as women and LGBTQ+ people. Can we reclaim these texts in ways that are counter-cultural and in ways that resist the status quo? During this month, we will explore themes of how the many identities each of us carry can inform our experiences of oppression, privilege, and liberation. Especially as we prepare ourselves for November elections. For more info you can view campaign info here: https://rmnetwork.org/rootedandrising/ and for more about intersectionality go here: https://rmnetwork.org/what-is-intersectionality We will view some of this material for the month AND we will be revisiting Pine’s Reconciling Statement, written in the early-90s, for a much needed update and recommitment. Happy #NationalComingOutDay! Pine United Methodist Church, San Francisco celebrates all sexual and gender identities, questioning and those who are coming out to themselves. We are all fully known and fully loved by the Creator. As a prayer, we lift up this song "For Everyone Born" - sung by our queer friends - as we work for collective justice, joy, compassion, and peace in the world. [Video Description: Two Asian American Queer-identifying Christians playing piano and singi...ng the hymn, "For Everyone Born (A Place at the Table)"] Song Lyrics: Verse 1 For everyone born, a place at the table, for everyone born, clean water and bread, a shelter, a space, a safe place for growing, for everyone born, a star overhead, [CHORUS] and God will delight when we are creators of justice and joy, compassion and peace: yes, God will delight when we are creators of justice, justice and joy! Verse 3 For young and for old, a place at the table, a voice to be heard, a part in the song, the hands of a child in hands that are wrinkled, for young and for old, the right to belong, [CHORUS] Verse 5 For everyone born, a place at the table, to live without fear, and simply to be, to work, to speak out, to witness and worship, for everyone born, the right to be free, [CHORUS]

THIS SUNDAY, OCT. 4, 2020: Soko Bukai (historically Japanese American Christian churches of San Francisco), of which Pine UMC is a part, gathered together for our annual joint World Communion Sunday Service. We were pleased to have with us as our Presenters, Ligia Montano and Jessica Lehman from San Francisco Senior and Disability Action (SDA). We learned about care-rationing and how we can respond in ways that uplift and advocate those who are often marginalized by our healt...hcare system - seniors and people with disabilities. To take action alongside SF SDA, you can: 1. Send a letter to Kaiser for transparency and to stop care rationing: https://actionnetwork.org/lette/kaiser-stop-care-rationing/ 2. Check out this list of many ways to take action and to get the word out about this campaign: https://docs.google.com//12AUFCBUi5s7Q2Vg2EKJF0YmhHNA/edit 3. THIS SUNDAY, SEPT. 20, 2020: Our third Sunday exploring our theme - #MessyAF: A Story of Liberation! We journey alongside the book of Exodus. This Sunday, we had an afternoon prayer service instead, to encourage folks to attend the Cal-Nev Annual Conference Worship Service of Ordination, so this service was a bit shorter with fewer voices. This Sunday we talked about Exodus 16:2-15, which focuses on the Israelite people's hunger as they journey through the wilderness and God ...responding through miraculous food - manna. THROUGHOUT THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER: Moving towards liberation is not always a straight line, nor is it always a clear cut path. Often times, the journey towards liberation can be a very messy one. It can cause us to reassess who we are as individuals and as communities. It can cause upheaval to our relationships, including our relationships with God. It can cause us to question any frameworks we have created in interpreting our world. We will reflect on and explore this messiness towards liberation through the story of the Exodus in the Bible - in which God, through Moses, brought enslaved Israelites out from under the thumb of the Egyptian Empire at the time. What happened after they left Egypt? Did their struggles dissipate? Is this story a liberating one for all people? If not, how might that be problematic or justify harm? Approaching November elections and in the midst of uncertain times, how can we ready ourselves for the continued march towards justice and liberation for the long haul? Tomorrow, we'll take a look at Exodus 17:1-7. To get the info to join us live, go to tinyurl.com/pinesundayworship. And here are some points to ponder: 1. How d...o you feel about Moses’ response to the Israelite people to this lack of water? What motivates Moses to go to God? 2. Communities often respond to injustice or oppression with complacency or with speaking out or complaining. Have you witnessed or experienced communities, or yourself, respond to injustice or oppression? 3. Based on today’s reading, for the Israelite people who have been liberated from enslavement, how might the healing happen? How might this event be part of it? 4. How might today’s reading point to liberation? Might it challenge any binaries or frameworks you see existing in our world, in our communities, in our relationships, or in yourself? 5. How is this text relevant for us today? How might it inform how we move through the world as people of faith and in our ministry? See you tomorrow!
