And one flower, in particular, has come to represent the somber holiday. The poppy is officially recognized as a symbol of remembrance. ... The Memorial Day we celebrate today was merged with the wearing of poppies in the 1915 after the publication of the poem, In Flander’s Field, by Lt. Whether you’re unwinding after a long day in front of your computer, looking to release a tight neck and back from chasing kids around all day, or just finished a tough upper body workout and looking to reduce soreness these Pilates Stretches are for you! Try these 2 favorite Pilates stretches to relieve neck pain, tension, and stiffness. Do the exercises as part of your daily pilates routine. ... Neck rotation - targets the sides of your neck and helps to improve your range of motion. Keep your shoulders and hips facing forward throughout the movement. 1. Slowly rotate your neck to the right. 2. Gaze over your shoulder. 3. To deepen the movement, gently press in your chin. 4. Hold this position for up to 30 seconds. 5. Repeat on the opposite side. Do each side 3 to 5 times. Cat-Cow Pose - incorporates neck flexion and extension, which helps to relieve tension in your head, neck, and back. It also helps to promote body awareness and good posture. 1. Begin on all fours in tabletop position. 2. Inhale to expand your belly as it lowers toward the floor. Gaze upward, lift your chin, and allow your head to tilt back slightly. 3. Exhale, tuck your chin into your chest, and round your spine toward the ceiling. 4. Pause here, allow your head to hang down. Move your head in any comfortable position to relieve tension. 5. From here, move between the lower and upper positions at your chosen pace. 6. Allow your breath to guide the movement. Continue for at least 1 minute. There are several strategies you can use to prevent neck stiffness. Try out some of these options: For every hour of seated do light exercises for at least 5 minutes. Be aware of your posture in all positions as you move through your day. Get a massage. Such benefits include an improvement in: Abdominal and glute strength Upper body strength, flexibility and shoulder stability Body symmetry and muscle tone Spine mobility and bone strength Posture All mat exercises teach skills that translate and relate directly to the equipment exercises. While the principles of Pilates apply to both equipment and mat (core control, spine mobility, neutral spine, shoulder and pelvic stability etc.), learning these basics on the mat makes equipment work safer and more efficient. Mat classes are challenging. On the equipment, we use different spring tensions to provide both assistance or resistance, hence increasing or decreasing workout intensity. The hand is the visible part of the brain. ~ Immanuel Kant, German philosopher 1724 1804 During this seemingly endless covid time, I have become increasingly aware of how we neglect our hands, those little things at the end of the arm that we use for feeding and dressing ourselves, computer work and all that on line learning (tablets & smartphones), amongst other things. They are lovely things and without them a hug is just not the same; carrying your baby or combing your hair is just not possible. Yet increasingly I deal with people who are not able to do the most basic tasks or even a mat class or an intermediate level pilates class because their wrists and hands are unable to handle the load or the complexity of the work. Our zoom class workouts look to incorporate more focus into strengthening the hands and wrists as well as maintaining Range of Movement (ROM) in our hands in order to allow us to do all the things we need to do using our hands. HERE' S HOW: Sitting on the edge of your bed, keep the left foot on the floor and cross your right ankle over your left light. Gently fold over the leg and lean into the stretch. Safe stretches are possible at home with just a little imagination. Keep a chair nearby if balance is an issue to helpassist in getting into position. Facing forward: Pick your right foot up and place on top of bed. Lift arms up by ears on an inhale. As you exhale, fold over your right leg reaching your nose to your knee. Keep your hips even and stand firm in your left leg. Repeat three times. On third time, curl forward and turn your opposite ear to the knee. Facing side: Carefully, pivot to face away from the bed, right leg extended out to the side. The left foot will face forward and hips will stay aligned. Like mermaid, lift left arm overhead on an inhale and as you exhale, side bend over to the right leg. Repeat three times. Switch legs after completion. Remember to engage into your powerhouse during your stretches. Using your core utilizes your strength while you progress in your flexibility and keeps you safe! AND NEVER FORCE A STRETCH. DO YOUR HIPS HURT FROM SITTING SO MUCH? This 'new normal' of activity or lack of activity has left a lot of us sitting way more than we normally might. Not only are we sitting more, but we may be sitting at desks in chairs we are not used to, or that don't fit, or maybe we are on a couch, a floor, a bed, who knows!! The point is, we are sitting more, we are hunched over our devices ... and our hips may hurt as a result. The beauty of the Pilates system is that it is all about... lengthening out our spines, our legs long from the pelvis, our arms long from the shoulder, our neck long with our crown to the ceiling. Which exercises specifically help with our hips? Mirko's class features the Single leg Stretch.
