I think about light, atmosphere, and perception of space in my work. The color fades and bleeds suggest atmospheric space, so there is sometimes pictorial reference to landscape, but the space is often topsy-turvy with multiple horizons, or bending, warping space. - Pamela Jorden. Jorden works both vertically and horizontally on her oil-on-line surfaces, brushing and pouring color to create layers of rich luminous color. Swipe for studio views and works. @pmljrdn #pamelajorden #philipmartingallery @ Downtown Los Angeles

In her studio this week, Katy Cowan is working on a group of 30 x 40 cast panels (in progress). Cowan writes, "For this series, I composed five aluminum panels that could connect as one massive piece, but can also be seen as individuals works. Doing this forces me into painting/thinking (more so than sculpture/thinking) and I wanted that challenge. I chose to compose the ropes on these panels in such a way that inclined towards dreams, movement, and the fluctuations in landsc...apes influenced by wind. I've really gotten to know the ropes I reproduce in metal and how different sizes of rope react and pull up different references for me when I am composing them to be cast in metal. The (0.5") thinner, cotton ropes feel more like light drawings that allow me to reference dreams and wandering - they also knot up quite nicely! The (1.5") large cross-fit ropes are the best for bold rope compositions and untangle in such a gorgeous way. Their bold, recognizable form degrades so quickly when I untangle them, and immediately calls up references beyond the reference of a rope. These are my favorites. I am hoping in this series to bring together the small and large ropes together in such a way that they can remain loose to invoke dreams and landscape, while maintaining instances of their tool-ness while I approach them with oil paint, spray paint and graphite." #katycowan @katycowan #philipmartingallery @ Berkeley, California See more

In her studio this week, New York-based artist Joanne Petit-Frère is storyboarding her new film. Petit-Frère’s work draws on history, politics, religion and sociology. Braided with at least 8 colors of synthetic hair, her wall tapestry is a luscious and subtle blending of texture and tone. Joanne Petit-Frère...
