Turns out pet portraits are a great way to safely shoot in the Covid era! Although Coco here isn’t the best at social distancing... licking your photographer’s camera and face REALLY isn’t proper photo shoot etiquette. . . I’ve always seen herons as beautiful, majestic, and graceful. Watching this great blue impale a gopher was the first time I saw one as an intimidating apex predator. . . . The heron stalked slowly through this field in Griffith Park, and then staked out a hole in the ground. It waited patiently for the gopher to peek out, and then it struck like an arrow out of a bow. I couldn’t help but think that a velociraptor might have moved an awful lot like a bigger faster version of this hunter!

The Snow Moon put on a SHOW the other night! Check out this halo effect that formed as a few clouds rolled into the scene. . . Occasionally I find it hard to force myself to go out on a mission to find a shot like this, especially on a super chilly night when I’m sitting next to a warm wood stove. I’ve got to always remind myself to ignore the excuses and make the extra effort. You can’t get the shot if you don’t show up!!

I felt compelled to visit the capital this AM at sunrise. It was a gorgeous misty morning, and I felt energized being there.

With 5+ of snow in New England, autumn seems to be rapidly coming to a close! I’m heading back down to Washington DC to chase fall. Feels like going back in time. . . Here’s a pre-snow autumn in New Hampshire pic of @oceandontcheat

My dad recently retired. I put that in quotes because you can see how much he has slowed down since then. The amount of energy he puts into his GORGEOUS garden, chainsawing the latest fallen tree in the woods, not to mention wrestling the grandkids, is insane! I mean really, I’m burned out after an hour of trying to keep up with the kids, and that’s just Dad’s warmup. . . . He’s a biologist, a poet, a self-taught outdoorsman, a small business owner, a teacher, and a family man. With all those titles, it seemed appropriate to give this portrait a certain superhero vibe.
