The winds are picking up locally. This post from our friends at Santa Rosa Fire Department serves as a great reminder to secure outdoor furniture, umbrellas and canopies. If you have these items at your home or business, please take the time to secure them. Our strongest gusts will occur overnight.

New incident in Napa Co. Smoke is visible from Petaluma as well. There is currently no threat to Sonoma County. However, as we head into the weekend, a new red flag warning has been issued along with a high wind advisory on Sunday. Confidence for the wind event is high, and we could see winds similar to those we experienced during the Kincaid and Camp Fires. Please limit outdoor activities of things that could create sparks and ensure you and your family have an emergency plan in place, should something happen.

Today we remember Petaluma Firefighter James Mott- Line of Duty Death October 23, 1912 James Mott was hired as Petaluma Fire Department’s first paid professional firefighter in 1909. Firefighter Mott also served as the City’s jailer, ambulance driver and ambassador of goodwill. He led training, organized firefighters and set up standards that led to a modern professional fire department in the City of Petaluma. Firefighter Mott had a special bond with the department’s fire ...horse Black Bart. The two were nearly inseparable and went almost everywhere together. On October 20th 1912 Petaluma Firefighter James Mott made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. The fire bells rang Firefighter Mott and his trusty fire horse Black Bart bolted off with Petaluma Hose Wagon No. 3 to a fire involving an automobile in downtown area of Petaluma CA. Firefighter Mott’s task was establish first water on the fire and prevent the fire from spreading through the downtown area. Shortly after arriving at the fire, during the first suppression efforts a violent explosion tore the automobile apart and sent a sheet of burning gasoline and flames into the crowd watching the spectacle. The force of the blast was taken directly by James Mott burning him severely. Despite being burned Firefighter Mott assisted the injured bystanders to safety and helped the extinguish the intense fire. In all five firefighters, seventeen civilians, and four children were burned seriously at the fire incident. Firefighter Mott was gravely injured during the firefight and was transported to the local hospital where he lived for forty-eight hours after the explosion. During his last hours, he met with his family and fire personnel to give instructions for the care of his beloved horse Black Bart. Firefighter James Mott tragically passed away on October 23, 1912. Black Bart’s last duty was to drive his masters funeral cart. After the ceremony he was retired to stud as the fire department moved into the modern mechanized era. To this date Firefighter James Mott is the only Petaluma Firefighter ever killed in the line of duty. Firefighter Mott will always be remembered as a man of honor and a community hero.

Petaluma Fire Department 24.08.2020

Great reminder from our partners at PPD! If you have seen any media coverage of the fire impacting Santa Rosa, this is how folks are (and were) being alerted to evacuate, in addition to all of the wireless alert options. Additionally, Petaluma is once again receiving neighbors from the north as evacuees. Please be patient and cautious driving through town today. Lots of new folks to our community, temporarily, that may not know their way around. We are all in this, together.
