Causes of Excess Algae With the summer heat comes evaporation and it's easy to let algae rule your pond in our hottest months. Below we've listed some causes of excess algae and ways you can prevent them. ... Fish waste, too many fish, overfeeding, decaying leaves and plants, law fertilizers and decomposed fish. A build up of sludge on the bottom of the pond will feel the algae also. New Ponds are very likely to have an algae bloom, which is not necessarily a bad thing. The algae is consuming the excess nutrients in the water. Give the pond time to balance before adding fish as they will only add to the nutrient overload. Weather and temperature changes. In the spring, beneficial bacteria has only started to multiply. Plant coverage is not at maximum coverage. There may also be decaying leaves and twigs from last autumn at the bottom of the pond. Because there is a constant supply of nutrients, string algae flourishes in waterfalls and shallow streams. The sunlight is usually unobstructed and the water is warmer. There may also be a higher concentration of algae around the shallow edges of the pond where the water is warmer and there may not be enough water circulation there.

Had a little bit of rain in Los Angeles last night. Do you worry it may hurt your pond?? Your fish?? For the most part it is not a big deal but you do want to watch to see where the run off comes room if it goes into your pond. Did you put additives in your lawn or other ground plants? fertilizers? Is the all dirt and dust coming into the pond from the roof or trees?? If it is just raining into your pond - no worries. The rain water will not hurt it. ...
