Can a "mountaintop" experience change us and set us on a new path? http://www.pbumc.org/sermons/trusting-the-mountaintop/
One thing we can count on in our spiritual lives is that we will be changed. Those changes may come in large, memorable moments or in such small increments that it’s like rock being reshaped by wind and water. But, no matter what, in time, we will be changed. Next Sunday is Transfiguration Sunday in the life of the church. It’s the last Sunday before the beginning of Lent and we travel with Jesus, Peter, James and John to a mountaintop. ... http://www.pbumc.org/sermon-pre//trusting-the-mountaintop/
Join Pacific Beach UMC and La Jolla UMC in a joint online Ash Wednesday worship service. This will be a time of prayer and song with leaders and musicians from both congregations guiding us together as we begin the Lenten season. Included in this worship service will be symbolic ways to remember that from dust we come and to dust we shall return.... http://www.pbumc.org/events/ash-wednesday/
Why does Jesus want to keep his identity secret at first? http://www.pbumc.org/sermons/keeping-on/
A few Sundays ago I confessed that Mark isn’t my favorite Gospel but, the more time we spend in Mark, the more I find myself rediscovering what I like about it! We’ve mentioned that Mark uses words sparingly and packs a lot into a small space. In our reading for this Sunday, we continue to learn about the early days of Jesus’ ministry. ... http://www.pbumc.org/sermon-previews/2021/02/keeping-on/
What is your relationship like with authority? That’s the question we’ll start with as we delve into our scripture reading from Mark. http://www.pbumc.org/sermons/trusted-authority/

We're always waiting on something. What does it mean to be prepared? How might this parable about those waiting and watching give us guidance, inspirationperhaps light? https://www.pbumc.org/sermons/being-prepared/
The notion of being prepared always propels me back to my scouting days. I whole heartedly adopted the notion that it’s important to anticipate, to know what you might need and to be prepared, to the best of your ability, in any and every circumstance! Our scripture reading for this coming Sunday is all about being prepared. It’s a parable toward the end of Matthew’s gospel and one in a set of three parables that focuses on what’s called the Parousia or the end times. Those early Christians expected Jesus to return in the not too distant future and began to wonder about the delay. [ 684 more words ] https://www.pbumc.org/sermon-previews/2020//prepared-being/
What saints have influenced and blessed your life? How are you blessed in the Now and in the Not Yet? https://www.pbumc.org/sermons/blessed-in-the-not-yet/
Sunday is a special day in the life of the Church as we will be celebrating All Saints Sunday. The United Methodist Church understands saints in the New Testament sense of the word which includes Christians of all places and times. We’ll spend some time with a passage from the Book of Revelation that lifts up a vision of martyrs who came through the great ordeal to gather around God’s throne where there was no more hunger, no more thirst and where every tear was wiped away from every eye. The widow gave her all, but what does the context say about the responsibility of the religious leaders? https://www.pbumc.org//generous-discipleship-relationships/
Our scripture passage for Sunday is the account of the widow’s mite. Jesus was with the disciples outside of the Temple as people were making their donations to the Temple treasury. Many rich people put in a large sum of money, possibly drawing the attention, head nods and approval of others. The widow, placing two small coins in the treasury, was noticed by no one but Jesus. Jesus pointed her out and said that her gift was greater than any other because she gave it out of he...r poverty rather than out of abundance. The original intention of this week's sermon was to explore this passage about the generous widow and lift up the importance of our relationship with God, our resources and one another as we think about being generous disciples. But the more Pastor Lori studied this text, the more her sermon plan got derailed! She started out thinking about the attitude of the giver, but ended up realizing the spotlight was on the responsibility of the institution, the receiver. Join us on Sunday to hear more about her spin on this story! #onlineworship #onlinechurch #worshipfromhome #discipleship #stewardship

How does life in a pandemic affect our understanding of scarcity and abundance? https://www.pbumc.org/serm/generous-discipleship-abundance/
We return to a familiar passage, the feeding of the 5000, to look at it from a different perspective. We as a congregation are entering into an intentional time of reflection on stewardship and this week we focus on themes of scarcity and abundance as we encounter them through this text. You might remember that a large crowd followed Jesus and his disciples into a very remote, deserted place.... If we're among those unexpectedly invited to a big wedding, can we help make sure everyone has something appropriate to wear? https://www.pbumc.org/sermons/who-let-you-in-here/

This week's passage is the Parable of the Wedding Banquet. Common interpretations of this passage always felt kind of escapist to me. A single attendee in the parable just isn't fittingly dressed, and he gets thrown out on his ear? I happened to grow up in a Christian community that believed you dressed your best for Church, because you were showing up "for God." Although I don't remember any sermon in particular, I'm quite certain at least one preacher connected dressing well on Sunday morning to this parable in Matthew 22!
