From December 3 - 6, we just had a baker's dozen players attend our PBI World Tennis Camp at the beautiful JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa. We had a ton of fun, some achy muscles and learned a great deal - AND managed to stay socially-distanced throughout!

And we officially open on November 21!!! Our tennis shop will be open, PBI professional Shea Donahue from last season will have already joined us, and we will offer a program with 1. Daily morning clinics, 2. Four drill sessions, 3. One Grand Slam Round Robin 4. And plenty of openings for private lessons throughout the week. ... Tennis retail, court-time management, racquet re-gripping and re-stringing, player-matching and everything that we've become famous for through the years will be back in high gear. Masks must be worn while in the tennis shop and on your way to the tennis courts, but can be lifted once you hit the tennis court and stay socially-distanced. Come in and say "Hi". We're excited to be back in business!!!

Okay, tennis commentators. Would you please, please stop talking so much about the service toss? The tennis serve is a toss and a throw, and the throw is SO MUCH more important than the toss. Boris Becker had a 1.5 - 2-foot toss variation on his serve, and he managed to muddle through! Yes, sometimes the height of the toss can be adjusted over time, but that also depends on that particular player's rhythm and timing. These are professional athletes. If the toss is even... a foot to the right or the left, this should make absolutely no difference on the serve - IF they have a good throwing motion, are balanced and have a rhythm that works for them. If the wind is blowing, if the sun is right where you normally toss or if you get nervous, the toss is going to go off. Period. If you rely on a nirvana toss to hit a serve well, you will never perform well in these situations. Your toss can be perfect, and it means absolutely nothing until the throw (hit) with your hitting hand. For the recreational player - the toss should be consistent. It should be within a certain realm. If you toss up a real loser, let it drop. No problem. But if you listen to commentators and think that you have to have an amazing toss every time to be able to hit a good serve, you're screwed before you even get started. Just like a good baseball player can field and throw a ball from just about any arm position from almost under-arm to sidearm to high overhead and get the ball to its target, a tennis player can hit great serves off of imperfect tosses. If you can accept that your less-coordinated arm is doing its best and that your toss will NOT be perfect, you'll also find that the confidence on your serve increases, and you'll rarely ever think about your toss again. By the way, if you consistently have a abjectly bad toss, it's very often a rhythm problem. For those of you who have the absolute 'yips" on the toss, you have to be more patient, but you also even more have to know that if you have a nice, loose hand and wrist on your hitting hand, you can hit a good serve off of a fairly crummy toss. If you don't believe me, once we're back open, come take a lesson. If you're not satisfied, that lesson will be FREE!
