Friends...please be safe and keep in mind the hazards of any structures near high heat: glass that is not tempered can blow or shatter, gas mains, propane tanks, furnaces, water heaters - combustable sources, stored chemicals and pesticides, etc. Buildings can lose their structural integrity rather quickly in fire and high heat. With all this in mind, please be extremely careful when returning to any property that has been damaged by heat and be mindful of hazards - visible and otherwise.
Several years working on Raymond Winery...Thank you to the great folks at Raymond/Boisset and the County of Napa Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors for giving us your guidance and support of this great place to experience wine.

It looks like the 30% solar tax credit which was supposed to 'sunset' at the end of 2016 will be extended to 2020. Great news for the solar industry and rooftops everywhere!

The architect puts his money where his mouth is and goes solar. Ok, so now I feel better about advising my clients to do the same.

BEFORE: a historic 19th century barn structure in the hills of Napa Valley's Calistoga, California. Though we tore down the structure, we saved all the materials to reuse in the new barn, helping to preserve the spirit of the original structure. One of our favorite types of project is restoring historical spaces. The Hatchery Building in Saint Helena was built in 1884 from native fieldstone. Read more about how we helped restore this incredible building, keeping history in tact: http://paulkelleyarchitecture.com/project/hatchery-building

Napa Valley Register asked: What is the biggest challenge your business has faced? We answered: The profession in general is faced with two huge challenges: the economy and sustainability. Our work ebbs and flows with the economy. Our bigger challenge is building and retrofitting structures in the 21st century. Our homes and offices need to be energy efficient, water stingy, healthy, well lit, light on the land and hopefully energy producers instead of consumers.

Tracing its roots to a Ghost Winery from the 1880s, this stone building in St. Helena had long ago been converted to a residence. Paul Kelley Architect and the owners, Luc and Jodie Morlet, resurrected the historic structure and transformed it back into a working winery. Paul was asked: "What is one thing you hope to accomplish in your lifetime that you haven’t yet?" He said, "I really want to pen a novel there aren’t too many pieces of fiction about architects." What's one of your life's goals?... http://napavalleyregister.com//article_cf8f0531-2a5d-5e74-
Recognizing embodied energy is a valuable tool for assessing how to best remodel or update your home. Can you live within the existing walls and make changes that affect comfort and style without giving up the original mass and charm? http://paulkelleyarchitecture.com//EmbodiedEnergy_NVL_0411
Pinning is an amazing way to collect your ideas and share them with your architect. Follow us and be inspired!
As the architect for the seismic retrofit and historic renovation of the Ramos Sherry House and Depot Saloon (circa 1880) on Railroad Avenue in St. Helena, Paul Kelley set out to retrofit the conjoined structures, making them structurally sound, accessible and modernized for the 21st century without leaving much evidence that such a major undertaking had taken place. http://paulkelleyarchitecture.com/project/sherry-house
Our hearts go out to everyone impacted by the fire and are so grateful for our first responders who keep us safe and out of harms way in such situations. It seems that with times like these we are tested but we do not falter and continue to choose to live in such wonderful part of the world as ours. When time permits, please review your fire and casualty insurance with you local agent. Particularly discuss code upgrade provisions in your coverage since there are so many components of a building that evolve with the knowledge from disaster and emerging technology. Make sure your policy will cover items such as fire resistive construction, fire sprinklers, seismic upgrades and the like should you ever need to repair or replace your home.

We helped Café Sogni di Dolci in Saint Helena convert a very small, vacant space into a contemporary restaurant with an Italian flavor.
School has started again and maybe you're thinking about becoming an architect Our advice: It’s a really rapidly evolving profession. Future and current architects have to look at what our impact is on the planet. What footprint are we creating and leaving as a legacy?

What is Embodied Energy? Maintaining what you love about your home not only makes you a good steward and keeps money in your pocket; it also conserves the original energy used and minimizes new energy and resources from being spent. http://paulkelleyarchitecture.com//EmbodiedEnergy_NVL_0411
Here is a wonderful comment from someone who saw the project on Houzz.com (a little of this now and then is why I love my job) Thanks kolohi: kolohi How wonderful! This is an outstanding rebuttal to those who so often insist that one must "update" historical elements for safety, code, comfort, etc. Good for this architect for his willingness to "work hard" to preserve and restore. Too often I hear how such projects "can't" be done, realizing that it was never even considere...d. I am delighted to see thoughtful, creative architecture in action. I would also add that we need not assume that reclaiming vintage materials for a project is necessarily a more expensive route; sometimes a small investment of labor is more than paid for in the savings on purchasing new materials (vintage materials can be more substantial/higher quality as well). The most important thing I have learned in my renovations? Creative thinking need not cost any more than uninspired thinking. See more

Napa Valley Register Q2: How did you get into this business? A2: I’ve always had a passion for design and how things go together. As a kid, I was always building and repairing things. In junior high, I took three years of drafting and architectural drafting and was hooked. I dreamed about how cool it would be to design homes in the Napa Valley. (Original article: http://napavalleyregister.com//article_cf8f0531-2a5d-5e74-)
From the Napa Valley Register 10 Questions article: Q1: What’s a typical comment you get about your work? A1: I always wanted to be an architect. I think people underestimate the amount of work and effort that go into it. It might be 10 percent inspiration and 90 percent perspiration. It’s a lot of work from the first design to the Champagne toast when the project’s done. (More: http://napavalleyregister.com//article_cf8f0531-2a5d-5e74-)
New shearwall from the building foundation all the way to the underside of the second story attic roof. #Napastrong
Old School meets new. My downtown Victorian Farmhouse remodel is coming along. This photo shows the installation of new rafters 'sistered' next to existing rafters. We did this to meet current code standards, take the slope out of the existing roof and create a thicker cavity for insulation. The framing is beautiful.
