On this day 115 years ago William Seymour launched his 24-7 Prayer room in Azusa Street, Los Angeles, and the rest, as they say, is history. Within a month hun...dreds were gathering to pray night-and-day under the leadership of this remarkable, one-eyed African-American holiness preacher. It was scandalous to many that men and women, black and white were praying together right through the night, but here we have true Pentecostalism: not just speaking in tongues, but racial and sexual reconciliation through the Spirit of God. "Brother Seymour generally sat behind two empty shoe boxes, one on top of the other. He usually kept his head inside the top one during the meeting, in prayer. There was no pride there.... In that old building, with its low rafters and bare floors..." (Frank Bartleman) There are more than 584 million Pentecostal and charismatic Christians today, representing by far the fastest-growing and most dynamic wing of the global church, all tracing their roots back to William Seymour and the multi-racial 24-7 room he established in a dilapidated clapboard building on Azusa Street just over a century ago. Some people still ask me what the point is of a special prayer room and of praying night-and-day in one, when it’s perfectly possible to also pray alone at home or out in nature. Well maybe ‘Azusa Street’ should be my answer. And as for William Seymour, at a time when we are quite rightly celebrating great black lives, very few have been greater in influence than this son of emancipated slaves, raised in extreme poverty, whose legacy of leadership changes the world to this day.
