Pasadena is home to many notable Black families whose histories go back to the city’s very early years. Early pioneers such as the Prince family headed west from Tennessee to stake out a new and better life. It was William Island Prince, the youngest of three sons, who first moved to Pasadena in 1884 to seek work. At the age of 13 he began working in the city as a dishwasher. His father (Samuel), brothers (Frank and Charles), and stepmother (Penelope Weimar) joined him in 188...6 and they became the second black family to live in Pasadena. Over the years, William’s hard work and commitment to his family and the Black community helped his family establish their place in Pasadena’s rich history. He was politically active in the Republican Party and the Afro-American Congress, of which he became state president in 1904. In 1901 he served on the Rules and Order of Business Committee for the nonpartisan nominating committee for the first publicly elected Mayor of Pasadena. Besides involvement in several commercial enterprises, he also made extensive real estate investments in the city. He is perhaps best remembered as an active and popular minister of the First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Pasadena, which he helped founded. He and his wife Ruby Edmonson had eight children, all of whom graduated from Pasadena High School. A family history compiled in 1983 details the accomplishments of William and his brothers Frank and Charles and their children in the fields of education, administration, and music. He died at the age of 71 on March 1, 1942, after being struck by a car during an air-raid blackout on February 25. This photo of William Prince was originally published in the 10/31/1908 Pasadena Daily News. This week we throwback to Halloween 1922 at the La Vina Sanatorium where a masquerade ball was held for its patients both young and old. La Vina (the vineyard in Spanish) was a medical facility for tuberculosis (TB) patients to recuperate and heal. It was founded in 1909 by Dr. Henry B. Stehman who believed the temperate climate of Pasadena could help improve the conditions of TB sufferers. Over the years the sanatorium expanded and became a renown respiratory disease hospita...l that provided health education and taught life skills to children and treated WWI veterans whose lungs were damaged by toxic gases. However, 26 years of growth and progress literally went up in flames when La Vina was destroyed by the Las Flores Canyon fire in 1935. Committed to helping those suffering from TB, Dr. Stehman and La Vina quickly drew plans to rebuild a new facility with the help of noted architect Myron Hunt. The new La Vina opened in 1937 and continued its TB patient care and research until the early 1980s when it merged with the Huntington Memorial Hospital. A building named after the sanatorium still stands on the hospital grounds, a reminder of Dr. Stehman’s work and La Vina’s legacy. In the spirit of the spooky season, we wish everyone a fun and safe Halloween.
