Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Pasadena Heritage! We can’t help but think what it would have been like for the early settlers and visitors of Pasadena to have their Thanksgiving feast. Pasadena was a warm and sunny destination for those looking to escape the cold in the east. Pictured above is a group enjoying a meal with a snow man on Echo Mountain in 1895. Many of you may have enjoyed the hike up with Echo Mountain and seen the ruins of the old hotels. We can only wonder what the Thanksgiving celebrations would have been!Photo credit: Pasadena Public Library photo archives

This week’s #historyathome comes from a member all the way in Maitland, Florida! Tucked away near one of Central Florida’s numerous lakes, is a truly unique example of Mayan Revival Architecture, the Maitland Art Center. Originally called the Research Studio, the Maitland Art Center was founded in 1937 by artist and architect Jules André Smith. An artist colony for many years, Smith’s legacy continues as the Art Center hosts residents and studio programs which continues to ...draw nationally-renowned artists. In 2014 the Maitland Art Center was designated a National Historic Landmark, the first historic site designated as such in Central Florida! Its unique Aztec and Mayan design is one of the last surviving examples of Mayan Revival Architecture in the Southeastern portion of the United States, making it historically and architecturally significant. We encourage you to learn about the historic sites around you, or dig into the history of your own neighborhood or home! As you do this please share what you find and use #historyathome and tag us.

We hope you will join us, the Los Angeles Conservancy and Hollywood Heritage Museum for a live panel discussion on the rise of preservation organizations in the 1970s. This is part of the LA Conservancy's 70s Turn 50 programming, which is a year-long celebration of 1970s architecture. Following the panel discussion there will be a virtual walking tour of the ArtCenter College of Design's original campus--a true 70s treasure and Pasadena landmark! We hope to "see" you on October 15th!

Join us as we explore the history in our own backyard! We encourage you to learn about the historic sites around you, or dig into the history of your own neighborhood or home! As you do this please share what you find and use #historyathome and tag us. If you joined us last weekend for our Virtual Happy Hour with Pasadena Trivia you would've answered a question on this hidden gem! Tournament Park, which is tucked away on Caltech's campus, was home to chariot races and balloon... flights, and was the official terminus for the first transcontinental airplane flight! Tournament Park is of course most well known for its ties to the Tournament of Roses. Early bowl games were held at the site, and when the Rose Bowl was constructed, Tournament Park was the end of the Rose Parade route for many years. We're anxious to learn more about the history of your community. Please share what you find and use #historyathome and tag us.

Vroman's Bookstore was founded in 1894 by Adam Clark Vroman. For many years it was the largest bookstore west of the Mississippi, and it continues to be the oldest and largest independent bookstores in Southern California. Over the years Pasadena Heritage has benefited from the Vroman’s Gives Back program, which donates a portion of customers’ purchase price to a local nonprofit of their choosing. Vroman’s is now at risk of closing. Help them keep their doors open by purchas...ing your next book or gift at this Pasadena treasure. Online and in-person purchase are available. #savevromans Photos curtesy of Vroman's Bookstore and the Huntingon.
