PART I: Are you ready to Introduce Flipped Learning into your RTO?

Here is a simple, but comprehensive three-part series Health Check for RTO and VET Practitioners who are interested in flipping their practice.  It is essential when implementing this learning strategy to benchmark your RTO against best practice.

 

What is Flipped Learning?

We at Circulus Education often get asked what the definition of “flipped learning” is. To be clear on what we’re trying to achieve, we can define flipped learning (sometimes referred to as inverted learning) as a process in which a RTO/VET provider or practitioner uses technology to enhance their learning delivery and resources to establish deeper, more efficient student learning opportunities in their everyday practice.  

 

It is not just simply a technology plan, it is a pedagogical model which reverses what typically occurs in class and out of class. Many consider flipped learning to be a form of blended learning.

Firstly, students are exposed to the material outside of class, typically in the form of video-based lectures and digital learning content in the convenience of their own learning environment of choice. Secondly, the student engages in face-to-face delivery in the classroom, which efficiently allows for more valuable class time for interactive teaching and activities such as problem solving, discussion, and analysis.

The Flipped Learning Health Check: Part I of III

This simple, but comprehensive health check has been divided into a three-part series, and should be responded to by all levels in the organisation – from leadership to trainers. It has been developed from popular demand to guide you through a series of questions to ask yourself in order to ascertain your RTO’s capacity to successfully deliver Flipped Learning courses.

 Part I: Technology, Process and Implementing Change Health Check.

 

Ask yourself the questions below to ascertain your current capabilities and identify your gaps.  Once you have identified your strengths and weakness, you are in a better position to build your digital strategy.

1. Technology Access Readiness

 

 

  1. Do all staff and students have access to the Internet in and out of school?
  2. Do your students have any access to the mobile devices i.e. mobile phones and tablets?
  3. Do you have an executive team who develop policies and procedures around using technologies ie mobile phones in your organisation?
  4. Do you have access to display technologies – monitors, IWB, data projectors etc?
  5. Do students have access to personal devices eg school supplied or BYOD program?

2. Current Technologies Support

  1. Can your current technology infrastructure (e.g. internet/connectivity) support your flipped effort? (eg internet/connectivity)
  2. Who provides assistance for issues with technology?
  3. What support do you have that will help teachers in using technology?
  4. What additional software and equipment are teachers going to need?

3. Policies and Procedures

  1. How is the digital content going to be organized, version controlled and who has access?
  2. How is digital content going to be shared?
  3. Who ultimately owns the material?  Trainer or institution?
  4. Are trainers/ experts going to get release time to develop and create the videos/resources?
  5. Are teachers able to download software to their machines as needed?
  6. What are the policies regarding access to YouTube etc.?
  7. What are the policies around social media and connecting with a teacher or expert?
  8. What are the policies regarding mobile phone use?

4. Communication and Managing the Change during implementation

Communication regarding the flip is very important.  It is essential for educators to place the emphasis on helping students more rather than solely relying on the videos or other technologies available to us.  Take a few moments and think about your communication methods. The questions below will help you formulate your messaging to the organisation.

 

  1. Why are you flipping your classroom routines?
  2. How are you going to explain the flipped classroom to trainers, students, and other staff members?
  3. What will students be doing at home and at school?
  4. Where can I find other examples of a flipped classroom?
  5. What does the research indicate?

5. Sensible Technologies

 

Below outlines the questions you need to ask to ensure you have the sensible technology and learning platform to support your flipped learning strategy.

 

  1. What is your learning objective(s) with the proposed technologies?
  2. How does the software and technology support the most recent  learning research?
  3. How can your potential software / technology create a more effective and efficient daily learning practice?
  4. Does the technology seamlessly connect or automate any current learning or work processes?
  5. Does the software technology have complicated steps and a steep learning curve?
  6. How can your potential software / technological tool create more collaboration and seamless push sharing?
  7. When using the proposed software / tech tool, what is the minimal skill level or knowledge a worker and learner needs to have?  
  8. How does the proposed software and technology related tool relate well to the existing knowledge of experts and learners?
  9. How does one guarantee regular access for all employees and learners?
  10. How does one ensure 24/7 training and support for newcomers?

 

6. Ensuring your Online Content is meaningful

  1. How can you give your students a reason to engage with the online content & watch the videos. Make sure you focus on the why.
  2. How can your motivate the student to participate with the content.  Assign a quiz or build an assignment around the content so that students engages with the content.  
  3. Make sure the content can be accessed on multiple devices such as phones and tablets.  Each student will have their own personal device and we want to make sure they can access it.
  4. Do you have to create all the online content internally or can you have an external partner who could assist you?
  5. Can you take free videos and online content from another web sources and online content providers i.e. Khan Academy?
  6. How are students going to view the online content?
  7. How are you going to monitor your students engagement with the content?
  8. If you have a Learning Management System, does it allow the students to collaborate with one another?
  9. Can student post questions and discuss the content if they need further support?
  10. What assessments in your course suit the online environment vs the face-to-face classroom vs the workplace environment
  11. Are the learning goals specific, clear, worthy, realistic, and achievable? Are they clearly communicated to the student
  12. Are the activities meaningful and is there sufficient time to finish?
  13. How the learners going to be evaluated? Has it been communicated to the student

  • Flipped learning is  a process in which a RTO/VET provider uses technology to enhance their learning delivery and resources to create more efficient student learning.
  • It is not just a technology plan, it is a pedagogical model which reverses what typically occurs in class and out of class
  • To benchmark your RTO against best practice, you must assess the strengths and weaknesses of Section 1: Technology, Process and Implementing Change.
  • This Health Check involves:
    • Your access to technology; how readily available is it to your students.
    • Current technology support
    • Communication required to manage the change effectively
    • Sensible technology and learning platform
    • Your online content; whether or not it is meaningful
