8 MONTHS SOBER "Life is much different for me today. It’s a life of peace and happiness. I no longer find myself worrying or anxiety-ridden over things that I cannot change. I no longer find myself looking for the next substance to make me feel different, I like my feelings now. Last April I said that I love myself for the first time in my entire life. I can stand in that word, love, today. Bouts of depression don’t plague me daily any longer. I know I say the word I here a lot, but dammit I am really proud of how hard I’ve worked to get here. Can drug addiction be cured or prevented? As with most other chronic diseases, such as diabetes, asthma, or heart disease, treatment for drug addiction generally isn’t a cure. Well said Cc @drheidigreen The truth is, sometimes people don’t want to change their unhealthy behaviors. Most of the time, we repeat behaviors again and again because they work. They get our needs met. And sometimes we learn that unhealthy behaviors can get others to meet our needs. . I see this a lot with emotional reactivity and dysregulation. Sometimes, people choose to stay disregulated because it has real benefits. Some of those pay-offs include:... -Keeping people from questioning you or holding you accountable because they are afraid of your reactivity. -Avoiding emotional intimacy because your reactions keep people from trying to get close to you. -Getting your way because people are willing to do whatever you want to stop your emotional reactivity. . When people aren’t taught better skills for communication and problem solving, they may find that emotional reactivity protects them or serves them in situations of conflict. . Can you relate to holding onto unhealthy behaviors because you get something out of them?
