The black-throated magpie-jay is native to Mexico, but this species has become established southern San Diego County close to the Mexico-United States border. This beautiful bird can measure up to 27 inches from its head to the tip of its tail. They’re quite the sight to see!

The brown pelican is a bird species commonly seen in the coastal areas of southern California, but that wasn’t always the case. Between the late 1950s and early 1970s, these amazing birds almost went extinct. The culprit was an organochlorine pesticide that was entering the marine food web. Once this pesticide was reduced in the population, the pelican numbers started to rise and the brown pelican was removed from the endangered species list.

If you live in southern California, then you have definitely encountered gulls at the beach. These birds, collectively referred to as a squabble, are known for being scavengers and are often seen in large, noisy flocks that congregate wherever food is available, and, squabbling while eating garbage too.
