In my 15 years of practice, I have come to learn that the vast majority of people who come into contact with the criminal system have some kind of past trauma and / or mental health issues, often unaddressed. Putting them in a cage for 23 hours a day (or worse if ad-seg or since Covid) only worsens mental health. Even ...the briefest of incarcerations can have huge impacts on a person’s mental well being and life, and lead to loss of employment, housing, benefits, children, and personal property. It can also be hugely disruptive to someone undergoing treatment as they are often not allowed to Bring meds in and can wait weeks or months to see a psych by video. The problem is that there is an appearance at least of public support for large sheriff budgets for guns and military toys and tracking operations but not for improving conditions of confinement.
