Lantana is a genus of perennial flowers native to warm regions of Africa and the Americas. It is popular with honeybees, as well as several species of butterflies and moths. Despite this, Lantana generally considered to be an invasive species, as it tends to out-compete other plants in ecosystems where it is introduced. In parts of southern India, Lantana has become so widespread that some communities have created a robust local market for furniture made out of Lantana materi...al. Here in California, Lantana is mostly popular for drought-resistant landscaping due to its vibrant flowers and evergreen properties. Pacific Urbanism is committed to celebrating and preserving our natural history and resources as we plan, design, and build the future of Southern California. Atwater Village is a neighborhood in Los Angeles that employs more than 4,700 workers in manufacturing, health care, and food service industries alone. Despite this, more than 6,600 people who live in Atwater must commute to other parts of the city to their workplace. According to the US Census, about 84% of Los Angeles commutes by driving. This pattern requires more than 23,600 vehicle trips in and out of Atwater every day, further contributing to traffic congestion and poor... air quality. By advocating for local policies that increase housing stock for employees near their workplace, we can all contribute to a more efficient and healthier Los Angeles. Atwater Village is a residential neighborhood along the Los Angeles River floodplain, wedged between Griffith Park, Silver Lake, and Glendale. This neighborhood was originally built to provide worker housing for the nearby LA Department of Water and Power facility. Today, Atwater is home to over 15,000 residents and several local businesses (including our own!) along Glendale and Los Feliz Boulevards. Although Atwater continues to grow, many of its original buildings and houses are still in-place, giving the neighborhood its distinct cultural atmosphere. Pacific Urbanism is committed to preserving the cultural history of our communities and expressing it as we plan, design and build the future.
