The gray whale migration is underway. The gray whales have one of the longest migrations on the planet, with a round-trip distance of approximately 10,000-1...4,000 miles. The average distance they travel per day is 96-138 miles at an average speed of 3-5 knots. Gray whales spend the summer months feeding around the clock up in the Bering and Chukchi Seas before departing for the warm lagoons off Baja California, Mexico, where they spend the winter months giving birth and mating. They are commonly referred to as the friendly whales in the lagoons as they enjoy interacting with the panga boats, and the mothers are known to bring their calves up to the pangas for a kiss or a nice head rub. @oceansidewhales typically sees gray whales off the coast of Oceanside between December and May, on both their southbound and northbound migration. Amazingly there population has rebounded from being hunted to near extinction to approximately 27,000. Not all the pregnant females have their babies down in the lagoons. @oceansidewhales sees lots of newborns on the southbound migration along our coast. It is very important for boaters to allow plenty of space for these amazing whales and not to interfere with them. Their biggest threats are killer whales and humans and are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. @oceansidewhales advises if you SEE A BLOW,GO SLOW.
