What to do: Before, During, and After a Wildfire What to do BEFORE a Wildfire: Create defensible space to separate your home from flammable vegetation. Prune all lower branches 8 feet from the ground.... Keep roof surfaces clear of pine needles, leaves and debris at all times. Keep rain gutters clear of debris at all times. What to do DURING a Wildfire: Turn on a TV or radio to get the latest emergency information. If you have a ladder, prop it against the house so you and firefighters have access to roof. If hoses and adequate water are available set them up. Fill buckets with water. Remove combustible material from the area surrounding the house (lawn chairs, tables, etc.). Turn a light on in each room for visibility in case of smoke. Open or take down flammable drapes and curtains. Close all venetian blinds and non-flammable window coverings. Move upholstered furniture away from windows and sliding glass doors. Be ready to evacuate all family members and pets when requested to do so. Turn off air conditioning/air circulation systems Detach electrical garage doors. Back in your car and leave the keys in the ignition. Secure your pets if possible. What to do AFTER a Wildfire: Check with fire officials before attempting to return to your home. Use caution when re-entering a burned area - flare ups can occur. Check grounds for hot spots, smoldering stumps and vegetation. Use your buckets of water. Check the roof and exterior areas for sparks and embers.

When protests and riots break out, it is natural for business owners to worry that their property can be destroyed. Unfortunately, what may start as a peaceful protest can end up with people taking advantage of an emotionally charged situation. Losing things you’ve worked hard for can be devastating. How can you protect your property and ensure you receive compensation if this happens?... Here’s what you should know. If you opted for comprehensive coverage on your auto policy, you may receive reimbursement for any damage caused to the vehicle by fire, by falling objects, an act of vandalism or in a riot. If your windshield is cracked or broken, comprehensive coverage can cover that as well. Before you buy comprehensive coverage for your vehicle, make sure you’re clear on the details of what is covered in case of civil unrest. ’ ’ If you own your home, you should have homeowner’s insurance. If you currently rent, buying renter’s insurance is wise too. It’s important to be clear on the details of your homeowner’s or renter’s policy as well. Most basic homeowner’s insurance will cover losses caused by weather (like a tornado or hailstorm), civil commotion, riot, and catastrophic events such as an explosion or fire. Your homeowner’s insurance can also pay for you to live somewhere else temporarily as your home is being repaired. If your business has sustained a physical loss during rioting, your business can be reimbursed if you have a Business Owner’s Policy (BOP). But pay close attention to the exclusions within the policy. These types of plans may not cover plate glass windows which may be an optional add-on. If your business is forced to suspend activity, you may be eligible for business interruption or loss of business income coverage. The specific terms of your policy and situation are important to determine how the loss may be classified and claimed. Generally, some physical loss to the property or dependent property is required. If you cannot run your business for a period of days due to police or fire department closing an area due to riots, you may be eligible to receive coverage under civil authority. This coverage generally has a waiting period as a deductible of 0-72 hours being shut down before coverage may apply. Now is the time to review your insurance policies and each of these coverages to ensure you do not suffer a financial loss. We’re here to help. Call or email today for a .
